Adding Google sitemap to your blog

NOTE: I am having serious doubts about Google sitemap for Blogger (blogspot) as we have no access to the servers and thus cannot do a true Google sitemap. The method given to us by Blogger is a workaround which uses the feed as a Google sitemap. I don't know how effective it is, especially if you set your feed to "short". There are others expressing doubts, and I have no time to do a proper research. So read this post with a pinch of salt.

Adding Google sitemap to your blog is an easy way to add your blog URL to Google index and get your blog crawled. With Google sitemap, you can get better crawl coverage and search results to help people find more of your web pages. You also get detailed reports about how Google directs traffic to your blog and how Googlebot sees your pages. (Note: there is some controversy over the usefulness of this Google sitemap. with Blogger, you have no access to Blogger's servers and thus have no chance to upload a real sitemap. Google came up with a way for bloggers using Google Blogger to add a kind of sitemap to their blog by making use of the feed. Note this this is in no way making a real sitemap, but I supposed it is still better than nothing. This would be especially true if you set you feed to "Short" and not "Full". I set my main blogs feed to short and am thinking a doing my own version of a sitemap which will consist of a post with links to all the posts in the blog and place a link to that post in the sidebar of the blog. In this way, there will be a links for the search engine spider to follow all the posts. However, this will involve updating the post each time you make a new post, and a lot of work if you frequently update your blog. Maybe I would do both. This is because although some doubt the usefullness of adding a Google sitemap for a blog this way, you will get a report of any problems that the Google spider may encounter when indexing your blog and having my own version of a sitemap in the sidebar will help the spider crawl all my posts.

How to add Google sitemap to your blog

To add Google sitemap to your blog, go to Google sitemap, and sign in with your Google Account (create one if you don't have one). In the Add site box, enter your blog url as shown in the screenshot below, and click OK. (In this post, there will be many screenshots. To enlarge them, click on the screenshot)

You will get a "Your site has been added to your account. Verify your ownership to view detailed statistics and errors for it" message and a button to verify your ownership.

Click the "Verify" text hyperlink, and you will be taken to a selection box to select your verification method.

Choose "Add a Meta tag". A meta tag will be generated for you.

Highlight this meta tag and copy it to clipboard. Sign into Dashboard, select your blog, click TEMPLATE tab and paste the meta tag in between the <head> and </head> tags. Save and republish. Check the "I've added the META tag in the home page of http://your-blog-url.com/" box and click the [verify] button.

There will be a message "We do not know about all the pages of your site. [Submit a Sitemap] to tell us more about your site. Click [Submit a Sitemap] and in the "Choose type..." selection box, select "Add General Web Sitemap".

Tick
[tick] I've created a Sitemap in a supported format. [?]
[tick] I've uploaded my Sitemap to the highest-level directory to which I have access.
[tick] My Sitemap URL is: [ ]

then enter the site feed URL into the "My Sitemap URL is: box. You can get the site feed url of your blog from SETTINGS. Click SETTINGS, SITE FEED tabs in the Dashboard. In the case of blogspot, just add /atom.xml to the end of the blog URL. (For example, the site feed URL of this blog is http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/atom.xml.) Then click "Add Web Sitemap" and you are done.

Update 22 April 2007: This post was written before New Blogger (formerly Blogger Beta) was introduced. If you are with New Blogger, use the feed URL. There are 4 possible feed URL for the New blogger:

http://yourblog.blogspot.com/atom.xml
http://yourblog.blogspot.com/rss.xml
http://yourblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/full
http://yourblog.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

substituting "your blog" with the actual name of your blog. The feed found by Feedburner for this blog are:

http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default
http://blogger-tricks.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

There is one further thing you can do, and that is to enable enhanced image search. At the bottom of the page, tick "Enhanced Image Search".

What does it mean to opt-in to enhanced image search? If you choose to enable enhanced image search, Google will use tools such as Google Image Labeler to associate the images included in your site with labels that will improve indexing and search quality of those images.

Ping Google sitemap

Now, whenever you update your blog, just ping Google sitemap by filling in the form below. Enter your blog feed url (***.blogspot.com/atom.xml) and click "Ping Google Sitemap" button.

Bookmark this page so that you can return to it whenever you want to ping Google Sitemap, which should be whenever you update your blog.

Update 11 July 2007: I think I need to draw your attention to My Advice on Google Sitemaps - Verify, but Don't Submit. There was a comment in that post which makes me want to rethink and hopefully do some research when I have time and if I remember.

For your convenience, I paste that comment from that site here:

"Hello i'd like to share my experience of sitemaps with you... i have a small site - 170 pages that i launced with a sitemap - after 3 months i was frustrated with only a handful of pages showing up in the SERPS - so i removed the sitemap and voila - within 48 hours 90% of my site was crawled and my traffic rocketed. I used a Google sitemap generator tool to create the sitemap in the first place - probably wasnt correctly formatted but it still verified ok with G. The moral of the story - IMO don't use a sitemap unless you A) Know exactly what you are doing and B) you have to."

You have any information or experience regarding this, I hope you will comment and let us know.

  2. U R RIGHT. it simplifies the complicated. but i have a prob. i have a google account. i had added my site n got verified by adding the meta tag. soon after due to my ignorance i had probs with my template. so i had to perforce use a new template. inevitably my customization got lost. my ques is how n from where do i get that meta tag to copy n paste in my template. i did not even keep a backup of the tag.

  3. If that happened to me, I would delete the sitemap http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/siteoverview?hl=en and start again.

  6. This method not too good at all, have try to open your own atom.xml? And see how much post listed there, and when you submit that atom.xml, means that you only give google that "less" post title.

I'm still finding ways to automatic blogger sitemap as I've posted here
Feel free to sunmit your idea if you have any

  7. If method outlined at Adding Google Sitemap to your blog, one can supplement it by generating a sitemap, uploading it to the web, then place a link to it on the index page.

  8. May I know what is the robot.txt file used for?

    And what is robot.txt analysis?

    ReplyDelete
  9. robot.txt is used to control which of your web pages you want the search engine spider to crawl. For example, you may have some content which is a duplicate of another webpage which you may not want to be counted as duplicate content.

  10. Why hasn't my page been indexed yet? I added both of my two blogs to google sitemap, added the meta tag and both are verified. When I go back into google sitemap ( and I added them both last week)- under the indexing summary it says "No pages from your site are currently included in Google's index. Indexing can take time. You may find it helpful to review our information for webmasters and webmaster guidelines.". It is JUST that it can take time, or did I do something wrong?

And a REALLY STUPID question- Im assuming Google sitemap is what gets you actually "indexed" on google, or in other words, this sitemap gets me listed with google. Am I right? If not, how do I list my blog.spot blog with google so that its searchable

  11. The most effective method to getting your blog indexed is to have inbound links from sites that are already indexed.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Sorry getting URL...Robots.txt message when trying to add site map have followed your instructions

    ReplyDelete
  17. You must be refering to the metatag "robots" content="noindex, nofollow"
If you put this in the head section of the template, what happen is, the search engine robots will not crawl your site and your blog will not be index and will not be found by search engine. This is something opposite to what is wanted normally by a blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  18. There is also a way to get google to index your blog... just add content by url feed within your my.google.com page
get a my.google.com page if you don't have one.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this blog--it is so helpful. I followed all your instructions and am waiting for it to show up in google. Dumb question: creating a site map will make it easier for people to find my blog when they do a search in google right? or is it just that is shows up in google blog search only? Thanks a bunch and have a great day!

  23. With Sitemaps you can make sure all your pages are crawled and indexed quickly by Google.

Using sitemaps has many advantages, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site.

Also, when you have a sitemap and submit it to the search engines, you rely less on external links that will bring search engines to your site.

  28. Hi, I have a question. Do I use the same meta tag in the described process if I change my template and paste it into my new template?

    ReplyDelete
  29. I believe the metatag is used only once, to verify that you are the actual owner of the site, and after that is not used anymore.

However, if you are not sure, I see no harm in pasting the same metatag again into your new template as I don't think it will do any damage.

  35. Google sitemap can help, but the very best way to get indexed quickly is to get inbound links from sites that have already been indexed. Do you have other blogs which have been indexed. If so, you can add in a link there yourself. Otherwise, you will have to depend on people. Or you can submit your blog to blog directories.

    <meta name="robots" content="index,follow">
    <meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow">
    <meta name="robots" content="index,nofollow">
    <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow">
    <meta name="revisit-after" content="7 days">

which help tell the search engine whether to index and/or to crawl the site.

    1. I really can't find the home page of my blogs (confusion)

    2. Also, don't think I pasted meta tag in correct place. Help! and Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Hi Rapsodia,

Nowhere in my post have I mentioned homepage. For your blog http://rapsodiaantillana.blogspot.com/ is your home or index page which may contain one or more (usually more) than 1 individual post pages, while http://rapsodiaantillana.blogspot.com/2007/03/los-nuevos-reclutas-y-el-pacific-mail.html is an individual post page (permalink). They have nothing to do with meta tag for installation of your sitemap.

What you need to do is to sign into your Dashboard, locate the blog, click Layout (for New Blogger) then click EDIT HTML to open the template editor. In the template editor, look for the <head> tag. Paste the meta tag immediately after the <head> tag.

73. Hi Peter,

Thanks for the information. Yes I read the doubts about sitemap, but decided to go ahead anyway. Google say it's a good idea. But we shall see.
Now, do you have any posts on Google analytics ? I find analytics totally confusing and Google help files totally useless ! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Hi Old Vic,

I have installed Google analytic into one of my site before and have checked the statistics once of twice. They give a lot of pie charts, etc. A lot of information. I think it will be good for those who are into e-commerce and using AdWords to display ads to direct traffic to their site. For me, it is too much information.

Regarding post, I have been meaning to make one but because of lack of interest and lack of time, I have not come round to it yet. I have Statcounter and they provide the kind of statistics I want and right from the beginning, I have been quite happy with them. They have also increased the log size of free accounts from 100 to 500. To tell you the truth, I don't often check the stats now as I am busy with other tasks, only occassionally. I haven't check the Google analytics stats since a long time ago. Since I used statcounter extensively, even for low traffic sites, it is more likely I will update a post about statcounter.

  77. Hi coolz1976,

This post was published before Blogger Beta (now New Blogger) was born. Previously, with the old classic Blogger, the feed is

    http://yourblogname.blogspot.com/atom.xml

Now, it seems there are 4 possibilities, above plus

    http://yourblog.blogspot.com/rss.xml
    http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/summary
    http://foodasmedicine.blogspot.com/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

I have done some tests as reported in Feed URL for New Blogger, but I am not very sure of any conclusions. I wish I have time to do more research and testing. Further, for blogspot, we are not using a real sitemap, but Blogger have made a work-around to use the feed as the sitemap. I think it is not as useful as for websites which have access to their servers and can put a real sitemap. Further, the feed for this blog has been set to "short" which is not good for Google sitemap.

I think a better idea is to put a different kind of sitemap like Sitemap and then link to this "sitemap" in the sidebar. This I think will enable search engines to crawl all your posts. The problem is, each time you do a new post, you have to manually update Sitemap and that is laborious.

If I have the time, I will do that and forget about Google sitemap. I may do a post on that, but I don't know when I will have the time and sufficient material to do that. If you are interested, maybe you can subscribe to this blog either by email or by RSS feed. You will see them in the left sidebar of this blog, somewhere near the bottom.

Hopefully, I have dealt with some of your questions.

  78. Hi coolz1976,

As I feared, the unclickable feed URL's is a long unbroken line and in Firefox will extend into the right sidebar and in Internet Explorer may cause more serious problem - sidebar slide to the bottom of the post. Let me know when you have read the comment and I think I will have to delete the above comment and put an update in the post.

  79. Hi,

You are perfectly correct. Because we can't get direct access to Blogger server, Goggle has come up with this less than perfect for bloggers to add sitemap to their blog. In fact I have second thoghts on this thing and I think I should do an update on the post. Thanks for the extra information.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Hi sgtalker,

There are controversy regarding sitemap and don't know if you read the update at the bottom of the post. Further, the Google sitemap actually is not possible for blogspot users because we have no access to their servers, so we can put up a real sitemap. They gave us a workaround by using the RSS feed which don't give a real sitemap and I am wondering how useful it can be especially as I set the feed to short in my main blogs.

I am toying with the idea of doing my own version of sitemap which is to make a post (which I will call sitemap) with links to all my posts and put a link to that "sitemap" in my sidebar. Then the search engine will find a link to all my posts in the main page and my blog may be crawled better. I have done it once, but it involves work as I have to update that "sitempa" each time I do a new post.

Regarding meta tag, I believe Blogger has already taken care of that and I have not bothered to add any meta tags in my blogs. So far, this method of adding Google sitemap has produced no problem for me.

Maybe you could remove that meta robot content="all" and see what happens.

  83. Nice blog indeed!

I have some problems with sitemaps too. When using feedburner, the following two feeds give some errors if they are used as sitemaps:
    http://guanaco17.blogspot.com/atom.xml
    http://guanaco17.blogspot.com/rss.xml

Then, if I don't use feedburner, the errors disappear, but sometimes the feeds return blank pages.

    So, in conclusion, I don't have a conclusion :-)

    I'm still doing tests.

Anyways, your method of "http://guanaco17.blogspot.com/rss.xml" is working fine. It seems that the blank pages are due to Internet Explorer and not to the feeder.

  87. I have a question about adding meta tags to my blog. I saw your post above:

    meta name="robots" content="index,follow
    meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow
    meta name="robots" content="index,nofollow
    meta name="robots"content="noindex,nofollow

My question is amateur as I'm new to blogging but...
It seems that the meta tags above would cancel each other out. Is that correct? Such as: index, follow then noindex,follow.. Should I enter this entire string of meta tags into my blog template or just a portion of it?

    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  88. Hi Information,

The only meta tag in the post is the meta tag generated by Google sitemap for you to add to your template to verify you have access to the template (implying you are the owner or administrator). You must be referring to one of the comments. That is a list of examples, not asking you to add all of them in. Which one depend on what you want.

My question here is that if I try to access the actresssnaps.com/rss.xml i will only see the last 25 posts. Older posts are not there. Then is it TRUE that Google will index only these 25. What shud i do to get my old pages indexed.

  90. Hi Bibin,

The method described here is a workaround for bloggers who have to access to servers storing their data and is not a true sitemap, but use feed. It is a second class method.

I have no experience with custom domain or hosting blogs on my own. If you are interested in the reasons, refer to Why I never use custom domain.

You however I believe do access to the server hosting your blog, in which case you may be able to do a true Google sitemap. In any case, if you succeed in doing so, I would appreciate feedback. Save the URL of this post so you can come back to comment later, or comment in any post of my blog.

I am thinking of doing my own version of "sitemap" for blogspot blogs but it will involve work, so haven't done it yet.

  97. Hi John,

I am thinking of adding a note right at the top of the post to let visitors know I have doubts about using Google Sitemap for blogspot.com as it is not a true Google Sitemap, but using a work around using the feed. This is particularly true for those who set their feed to "short".

However, I am not very sure about a lot of things and wish I have the time to do a proper research. Meanwhile, I am thinking of doing my own version of "sitemap" to help search engines crawl the whole of my blog, but it involves work and I am not a search engine expert and I now no longer have the luxury of time to keep checking the statistics of my visitor counter.

I think you are on your own. Sorry.

  101. Hi John,

Sorry for late response. No email notification for your comment.

    Regarding < title>< data:blog.pageTitle/ >< / title >

that has nothing to do with not getting your blog index, and it is important for search engine to have it there so to the best of my knowledge, it is a mistake to remove it.

As far as I know, the meta tag that tells search engine not to crawl your site is

    <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow">

and it would not be there unless you yourself have added it.

If you are patient, your blog will eventually get indexed and crawled, but if you are in a hurry, refer to Fastest way to get indexed by search engines.

I am afraid I have difficulties in understanding your problem.

"BETWEEN the the header and the head tag."

I don't know what is this header tag?

["header box" or even above the head tab]

I don't know what this "header box" is. I suppose the second one is <head> tag.

You can just past the meta tag below this <head> tag. That is the easiest way to explain.

While you are there, hope you will also post a question about how useful this workaround for a Google sitemap for a blogspot.com which uses feed as the sitemap is, as I have updated my post to show that there are some who doubt it is really useful. Emphasize that for non-self hosted blogs, we have no access to the server storing our data and thus cannot use a "real" sitemap. http://paulswain-editor.blogspot.com/search/label/FCP editor URL restricted by robots.txtHelp Jun 29, 2008

IN fact all 11 urls were being restricted due to the robot txt.

I've read that we can't delete the robot txt as it's in the root directory which we don't have access to. FYI I have deleted all labels from my blog.

Is there a simple way to re-enable robots to crawl my blog? or delete/replace the robot txt file.

I've included /atom.xmlto help with sitemap indexing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Swainy

  143. The meta tag

    <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW">

should be in the <head> section of the template, just delete it or edit it to index and follow

  144. I use feedburner and submitted my Sitemap to Google using the rss.xml format and received errors, namely URL not allowed and Invalid XML:too many tags.

    How do I fix this?

  145. Hi Matt,

To tell you the truth, I haven't use Feedburner much. However, I believe you have to submit your feed instead of Google sitemap. Feed will be something like (cannot give URL part as then, there will be a long unbroken line):

    blog URL/feeds/posts/default?alt=rss

  146. Thank you, Peter.

I managed to solve the issue. It is indeed the Feedburner redirect that causes the problem. For the benefit of any of your other readers, it can be resolved by submitting the sitemap in this form:

    rss.xml?overby=updated

  148. I have been trying to add my blog site map to google, but after completing submission process, it use to say it's status is pending and next day error.

What happened with my blog site map? Could you help me?

    I will be very thankful.

  149. Hi Peter,

You helped me the other day with advice on

    CONTENT="INDEX, FOLLOW">.

However i'm really concerned that the robot txt google placed on my site is preventing any updated indexing. Here is the robot txt file.

    User-agent: Mediapartners-Google
    Disallow:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /search

    Sitemap: http://www.paulswain.com.au/feeds/posts/default?orderby=updated

    Is this part the problem:

    User-agent: *
    Disallow: /search

and if so how to change it?

My blog was last indexed on May 29.

Many thanks for any help you can give.

    Cheers

  164. Dear guys,

I have a question that is it nessary to add "meta" tag to verify your ownership ... i guess i just went to my webmasters and verify my blog using upload file. infact i didn't upload anything to my blog but it says that site have been verified ... something like this and after that i just give rss.xml as a sitemap. but after passing almost 3 week it's not in search ... only my blog apears but not it's sub posts ....

do i really need to give sitemap ... i found some research about it that just verify your site and don't give sitemap and your all pages will be index quiekly. is it possible ???

    ReplyDelete
  165. How is it possible that without adding the meta tag or uploading file it verified?
I think it's not possible. Can you tell me what the process you followed?

  166. Praveen, did you read this?:

"Choose "Add a Meta tag". A meta tag will be generated for you.

Highlight this meta tag and copy it to clipboard. Sign into Dashboard, select your blog, click TEMPLATE tab and paste the meta tag in between the <head> and </head> tags. Save and republish. Check the "I've added the META tag in the home page of http://your-blog-url.com/" box and click the [verify] button."

  177. I have learned a lot from your blog. As you can see my site/blog, I made many changes. I have added a custom domain to my blog, removed all links from main page -- and now I think it looks like a website. All this without knowing anything about websites, domain names, hosting, html etc. I took a lot of help from your website in doing so. Thank you.

Feeds stuff is Greek to me. I don't understand even a bit of it. So please suggest a work around. I want to create a sitemap and submit that to google (webmaster tools).

  178. my website: www.sijju.com

  179. Yours is a Blogger hosted blog and you will have no direct access to a server. There is no way for you to do a proper sitemap and what is given is a workaround and the only alternative.

Now I am not an expert in this area and what I am going to tell you is my own understanding which may be right or wrong. What I did was generated another kind of sitemap or better named table of content which contains links to every posts in this blog (Sitemap or table of content and there is a link to the above from the homepage. My conjecture is that the search engine spider may follow this link and thus crawl all the post. This table is automatically generated.

    ReplyDelete
  180. I have posted a question on blogger help forum. I'll let you know if there is a better workaround.

  183. A user on my blog commented that my content was restricted to users in the USA. I looked over my settings and I have selected that anyone can read my blog and anyone can comment. Am I missing something? How can I change it to make it so anyone in the world can participate?

    I use blogspot.com

    Thank you.
    Scott G.

    ReplyDelete
  184. I am not aware of that (can restrict comments to US or any country). It would be good if you can get that commentator to sent you/me a Screen shot making and editing screen shots.

Also, since I am a Blog*Star and it is awkward for a Blog*Star to ask question, do me a favor and post this question at Blogger Help forum then come back here to give us the thread URL as there may be new features that I am not aware of but will like to be updated.
