Blogger Categories: Easy Method

Update: This method is for the old classic Blogger template. For New Blogger xml templates, you don't have to go through this convoluted method as now you can add LABELS which is Blogger's name for Categories.

Here is a very easy method to do categories using del.icio.us tag rolls. If you are not familiar with del.icio.us, surf over to Introduction to del.icio.us. It is much easier than the method outlined in Blogger categories: A simple method. You don't even have to write the HTML. The script will be generated by del.icio.us software. An example of categories using this method can be seen at this blog Natural Remedies.

The steps are as follows:
  • Sign up for a del.icio.us account. Even if you already have a del.icio.us account, sign up for another one with a different user name.
  • Log into your del.icio.us account
  • Tag each of your post with a suitable tag or category. For example, see Natural Remedies
  • Open your "My del.icio.us" homepage. This would be easiest if you are using Firefox. Click on the My del.icio.us button.
  • At the "My del.icio.us" homepage, at the top right-hand corner, click HELP, then under BLOG INTEGRATION, click TAG ROLLS (or go directly to http://del.icio.us/help/tagrolls). You will then see a page like in the screenshot below
  • Adjust the size, max font, min font to the size you desired. (When you are adjusting the size, make sure that all the tags are included as if you set the size too small, some of the tags may be left out.) If you wish, alter the color of the fonts to blend with your website. Clicking on the color square will unveil a color palette from which you can select your color. Or even better, download Color Pic to determine the correct color from your website.
  • If you wish, change the TITLE to something more suitable. I suggest CATEGORIES. Uncheck the icon box if you don't want the del.icio.us icon to be displayed.
  • Select whether you want to sort alphabetically or by frequency.
  • Select whether you want the tags displayed as a list or as a cloud
  • Tick tag counts if you want the number of tags shown
  • Highlight the script generated in the box below, copy and paste it into your template in a suitable position. I suggest pasting it after <$BlogMemberProfile$> which will display the categories just after the profile in the sidebar.
  • Preview, and if you are satisfied, save and republish.

  2. It does work... but I only see one "category." Amy reason why?

  3. I came across your blog from google groups. I'll try to introduce categories in my blog. Great tips & tricks for blogger users, especially for newbies.

  4. Thanks bunches. I got it to work with no trouble at all and solved the problem of no categories. Now I can organize my entries better. Thanks!

  5. Ok, I've done all this and it works great - just one thing is bugging me:
When I tag a post (or even use the permalink to view it), my sidebar shows up missing my "wall of fame" and my del.icio.us tags - So I get the post I want, I see my sidebar containing my profile and previous posts, as well as the I power Blogger icon, but the middle section of the sidebar vanishes!
    Any ideas?

  6. Remove the MainOrArchivePage and /MainOrArchivePage from the sidebar section of the template. (Note: HTML not allowed in comments so am unable to post the actual tag. The MainOrArchivePage should be surrounded by the less than and greater than sign.

  7. Hi Peter,
thanks for the reply. I removed all the MainOrArchivePage and /MainOrArchivePage from the sidebar section of the template. Problem solved! mille grazie! EXCEPT when I view a post from archives - then the mid section of the sidebar disappears again. Any ideas?

  8. Peter, me again, sorry.
Actually, just checked again, and the mid-section of the sidebar does show up from Archives. The only place it doesn't show is when I click on my first post - maybe cause I hadn't set up the del.icio.us tags/wall of fame at that point - but I'm not sure, can't remember. Does that make sense to you?
    thanks a bunch!

  9. Hi,
I'm a new blogger and really don't know much of the lingo so here goes my ?. I would like to put different "departments" on my one blog. Right now I'm using two different blog spots to do this and I have a feeling that I could do it within the same blog. I want to have a mulitude of interests on my blog that keeps everyone interested and I don't want to have to use 40 million different blog sites to do this. If you have the time, could you please email me your answer...I don't know if I'll be able to find you spot again. I've been everywhere in "space" trying to find answers and to tell you the truth I don't know where I am right now...pretty sad huh? Thanks sarah

  10. Help! I thought I followed the instructions, but del.icio.us says I have no tags. When I cut and paste the HTML into my Blogger template, the word "CATEGORIES" appears, but there's no list. Any idea where I'm going wrong?

  11. You probably haven't tagged any of your posts.

    ReplyDelete
  12. ok, same thing happened to me as brad. only i KNOW i haven't tagged any posts. the question from this total blog newbie is--how do you TAG your posts? and should this have been done BEFORE inserting the html?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I must not understand how to tag them. I pulled up each Permalink from my blog, hit the "Tag" button on my Firefox browser, entered a tag name, and hit "save". When I go to my del.icio.us account, I see a list of all the permalink pages with the tag descriptions I entered, but it says I have no links.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Figured it out...I had to wait for del.icio.us to record the tags--that takes some time apparently. Finally working--your article is a big help.

  15. Hi Donnakiser,

Sorry for this late response. Somehow, missed your comment. For more information on how to tag the posts, refer to Introduction to del.icio.us

"how do you TAG your posts? and should this have been done BEFORE inserting the html? "

It doesn't matter. It can be before or after.

  17. thanks for the response. i figured it out with a little playing around, a little conversation here and there, and a lot of hit & miss.
    thx

  19. This great tip works but when I click my new tag it takes me to http://del.icio.us/Username/tag page. Is this the way ti works? I want this way-when I click my tag it shud take me to that relavent post instead of http://del.icio.us/. Is there way?

    ReplyDelete
  20. No, that is not the page you are supposed to be taken to. You have done something different from what I described in the post.

  21. Thanks for the tip, I tried it out and it worked.

Only problem is, it only works when I'm using Firefox. Whenever I'm using IE or Opera, my whole sidebar dissappears. Any idea as to why this happens?

  22. Hi Fin,

You didn't give a link to your problem blog. I checked your profile, and got to your blog "Entertainment Collectibles" and there is no Categories there, but you have a photo which is too wide for the main column. I viewed it with Opera, but my guess is that that blog's sidebar will be at the bottom of the page in IE. For steps to solve sidebar problems, refer to What to do - sidebar slide to the bottom of the page. If you need to resize your photo to fit the width of your column, read posts:

  24. Hello it's me again :)Now I'm not sure if what I'm about to say is really going to be related to this topic but uhh how do I make 2 archives months automatically be displayed.Like I made my blog on Jan I guess and now it's Feb.So on the left side of my page it only shows Feb and not Jan.In order to see Jan you will have to click the "arrow-shape" thingy beside it and I don't want that, I want Jan to display my archives(posts) automatically too,so people won't have to click on the arrow on Jan to see the posts.

  25. The only way I can think of is a tedious manual method.

  26. Hi Peter, thks for d great tip! Appreciate if you could help as after installing, only "Category" appeared, it's not working on my site. Kindly take a look.

  27. A check at del.icio.us blackswanst bookmarks showed that you have not created any bookmarks at del.icio.us. This hack requires manual work. Each post have to be bookmarked at del.icio.us.

Also note this post was written before New Blogger xml was introduced. Now with New Blogger, you can use label list.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Thks so much for your prompt response, Peter! I've labels in my blog but wanted tag clouds instead. Ok, I'll try the manual way of bookmarking in del.icio.us later. Thks again!

  29. Hi again Peter,

I referred to your post regarding trying out del.icious for the tags but it doesn't really seem to work out that great for me, I'm not sure if it's because I didn't follow along correctly.

My site is iframe based, and as it's more into fashion, I would like to be able to post things labelled fashion instead of labelling in my blog entries, I was wondering if that's possible?

    Thanks for your time!

  30. In what way is it not working?

    Sorry don't understand. Please explain.
