Tip: How to make permalink more prominent

What is a permalink?

If you have enabled POST PAGE, then each individual post of your blog will have an individual post page with its own URL. If you are using the default settings for your blog, you will see at the bottom of every posts a line "Posted by (author) at (time stamp)" as illustrated in the screen capture below:

If you let your mouse hover over the time stamp, a pop-up will appear with the text "Permanent Link", and if you click on the time stamp, you will be redirected to the individual page of the post. This is good for your blog as people who want to refer (and link) to this particular post will be able to do so. However, this default setting have the disadvantage that the permalink is not prominent and is not easily noticed. Many are not even aware that the time stamp is a permalink. There is an easy way for you to make the permalink more noticible by adding the text "PERMALINK", as shown in the screenshot below:

To do this, you will have to look for this block of codes in your template:

<a href="<$BlogItemPermalinkUrl$>" title="permanent link"><$BlogItemDateTime$></a>

and add the text PERMALINK after <$BlogItemDateTime$>, like this:

<a href="<$BlogItemPermalinkUrl$>" title="permanent link"><$BlogItemDateTime$> PERMALINK</a>

  2. So, that's where that doo-dad is. I've seen it on some blogs and not others. Thanks.

  3. Yep, cool and clear!

Some people use easier expressions for non-bloggers, such as "Take it with you" or "Like it?" etc instead of Permalink.

  5. Finally, lights on. Very Good! You should try doing one for changing "X comments" to "X balls" or whatever to replace the term "comments". I know how to do it but new comers may like this tip.

  7. thanks a lot- worked brilliantly. However, searching for that piece of code was slightly cumbersome. To all the future readers of this post, its a good idea to copy-paste the entire code on say word and then do a search for that piece of code!

For those using the new Blogger Beta:
Expand Widget Template and look for this tag:

    data:post.timestamp/

Insert your text right after this tag and before the forward slash 'a' tag

  10. You might want to delete the previous <$BlogItemDateTime$> tag, or you may get a duplicate time on your line. This was great. Thanks.

  15. hi all.
I've been to the W3 school to learn a bit about HTML,but I want to know what the blogger terms are,,etc,,"outer wrapper","main wrapper" "side bar wrapper"and how would I re-position a graphic or widget. I have a test blog where I play with the code to see what I can do with it.
If there is a post on this subject I've missed just let me know,
    thanks
    Richard

  16. outer wrapper refers to the whole content of the blog.

main wrapper refers to the main column (posts)

sidebar wrapper of course refer to the sidebar

I thought I remember you asking how to center something. Please refer to Centering photo, search box, etc.

  18. Hi Richard,

Yes, it begin with an opening tag, followed by whatever, end witj closing tag. However, I have noticed once it didn't work with something. Can't remember what. Maybe I used span instead of div. Anyway, hope you will try it and report back the result.

  20. Hi Richard,

If you are having problem, try surrounding the stuff with <center> and </center>. They have been deprecated and not recommended but still work in almost all current browsers. You can buy yourself sometime. Not much harm except your blog will have errors with XHTML validation, but currently is no big deal. Even a standard blog using standard Blogger template will give errors when testing for XHTML validation but no one has complained about it.

Regarding digital camera, I am afraid I am a cheapskate plus I hate waste. See Zero Waste. I often end up eating the left overs that my children wouldn't eat. I use all free tools for my blogging (I need to generate income to supplement my pension to put my son through college and there is a Chinese saying, "small fortune don't go out, big fortune will not come in" meaning you need to invest to get good returns, but still....).

The digital camera my son bought is an expensive very compact one, rather like a compact handphone, but it has no zoom and you must keep your hands steady to get sharp photo. But I have got very good photo with it as long as I can keep my hands steady. Also all digital cameras in the shops are all 5 megapixels and above which I don't need as I don't intend to print any photo (not environmentally friendly, (See Enviroman Says), only for the web, and for that you don't need 5 megapixels. For less than 5 megapixels digital camera, I will have to buy online and the shipping charges will wipe out any savings I get.

    So hopefully, I don't get Alzheimer's

  21. Once again, Peter, you are the greatest thing that has happened to me. I got the name change to work, but now I can't get the permalink to work. I don't have the verbiage that you show in the blog.
    Thanks for the help.

  22. Hi My Profile,

This post was done when there was just the old classic Blogger. Now with the New Blogger, they do not use the old Blogger tags anymore. I have not looked into this aspect for the New Blogger but hope to get the time to do it sometime in the future. But this had been said so many times before I don't know which promises I have to fulfill first. Anyway copy-paste this comment plus post URL into Notepad and save it into the very long "to do" list.

  23. How can I put only the beginning of the post on the homepage and then, for example MORE INFO link to the whole long post? 'cause I do not want a long text to appear on my blogger homepage. How it can be done in Google blogger??? I can not find any such settings there. It all the time publishes all text on the homepage!

  24. Hi hotspot,

Google Blogger don't provide a way for you. You need a hack for expandable post summary. See Expandable post summary for New Blogger.

  25. I'm a little confused...I saw above how to add the Permalink to the posts, but I kept getting error messages.

    Here's the code:
    data:post.timestamp/ /abbr /a

Where would I put the Word Permalink? I had to take out the >>> so this thing would let me post.

    ReplyDelete
  26. its depend on some people. AS long as you manage to make money, its fine if you have lower PR. But the decision is yours..we still can make money with or without PR.. Permalink is importance.
