Tip: Putting the archive links into a menu

If you have been blogging over a long period of time, the list in the archives can get pretty long. You can put the links into a menu to make it more compact. It is pretty straight forward to do. All you have to do is to replace the default archive code with another set of code.

In your template, look for the default archive code which is shown below:

<h2 class="sidebar-title">Archives</h2>
<ul class="archive-list">
<li><a href="<$BlogArchiveURL$>"><$BlogArchiveName$></a></li>

delete them, and replace it with these codes:

<select name="archivemenu" onchange=

<option selected>- Archives -</option>

<option value="<$BlogArchiveURL$>"><$BlogArchiveName$></option>

and that is all there is to it. It is done.

Note: I have a nagging suspicion that if this hack is implemented on your blog, you may not be able to backup your blog right up to the beginning with Blog Collector. See How to backup your blog. Also, drop-down menu cannot be read by search engines, so it may not help you in search engine results.

  1. That might be a pretty important caveat to some people, mightn't it?

  2. yeah, one of the reasons I have only implemented it for the test blog, not for my main blogs.

  3. This is a wonderful blog!

  4. Hi Peter - thanks for the info on creating the archives menu. I have put it in my test blog and it's working fine. Will look at your topic re 'making a backup of your blog'. Great resource! Bernie.

  5. Hi thanks for the info. Do you know anyway to do the same thing to your Site Links?

  6. Peter,

First of all thank you for making the installation instructions available. Craftybernie said that this was the place to come if I wanted to install a drop down archive links menu in my blog. The installation was successful, however The menu is listing only one of seven months and the one month that it is listing is not showing the archived posts. Do you know how to get the menu to display the links for all seven months? Do you know how to ensure that the links that are displayed actually show the archived posts for that month? Peter I would greatly appreciate any assistance you can provide. Thank you.

  7. i don't think i need this, because i only have 2 archive pages, but i will probaly do this in the future.

Thanks for the nice tip, it helps a lot. I've spent a lot of time trying to find something like it.

Now all I need is to list my archive links by title instead of date. Anyone have a solution for this?

  9. Hi Peter,

I'm looking for something similar to this, but want to display "Post Titles" for a particular tag. For example, I review movies and books, and would like to have drop-down menu for each. I don't want to use or any other tagging websites.

Would you know of a way to accomplish this? I've searched the web a lot but haven't found anything that'll work for me.

    Thanks for your help.

  10. Hi Amit,

I don't have much interest in putting my blog archive into a drop-down menu, so haven't done much research on that. Whatever is in this post is what I can give you.
