Favicon for your Blogger blog

UPDATE 22 July 2008: The website on which this post is based is no longer active. Please refer to favicon generator and host for an updated post.

A "favorite icon" or favicon (pronounced fav-eye-con) is a 16x16 pixels icon that appears next to a website's URL in the address bar of a web browser. If you are using a browser that supports tabbed browsing, the favicon will also appear next to the page's title in a tabbed document interface. If you look at the top of this page, at the left hand corner of the address bar, you will see a small graphic of a portion of a fake red-yellow-black "for Dummies" book cover (This has changed to a rare photo of myself laughing). That is the favicon for this blog. If you are using FireFox or Opera, you will also see that icon in the tab. If yours is a personal blog, a good icon will be your personal photo.

Adding a favicon to your blog is a good way to distinguish your blog from the millions of other blogs. To add a favicon, you need to generate a .ico format file, a place to host the file and add 2 link elements in the <head> section of your template. To generate the .ico file and to host it, you can go to MyFavatar. You need to have ready a roughly square graphic saved to your hard disk.

This was how I added the favicon to this blog. I had a fake "Blogger for Dummies" book cover generated by Dummies Book Cover Maker 2006. You can see the graphic here. signgenerator.org can generate other types of sign for you. (If yours is a personal blog, a good graphic to use will be your personal photo). I then use the free Irfanview to crop the bottom-right of the graphic and saved it to the hard disk. I then uploaded it at MyFavatar which also generated the codes for me to paste into the <head> section of my template.

(for instruction on how to get the script to paste into your blog's template, refer to update below)

Update: I have since changed the favicon to a photo of myself laughing. It was also cropped from a larger photo using Irfanview photoeditor (click "BACK" button to get back to this page).

Update: I have discovered that the favicon doesn't appear in Internet Explorer 6. It works for FireFox and Opera.

Further update: It does work with IE7. See the comments.

Update 15 February 2007: A reader complained of difficulties of making this work in New Blogger. I did exactly the same thing as what was described in this post for the New Blogger blog Testing Blogger Beta (now New Blogger). For the convenience of everyone, I paste below the relevant part of the template from that blog in the scrollbox below:

<head>
<!-- My Favatar -->
<link href='http://favatar.myfavatar.com/blogsmith.ico' rel='shortcut icon' type='image/x-icon'/>
<link href='http://favatar.myfavatar.com/blogsmith.png' rel='icon' type='image/png'/>

<title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title>

UPDATE: Received a request for help to get the script for the favicon. So what I did was to go through the steps to add a favicon (my mugshot) to Blogger for Dummies. I list down the steps that I recorded as I generate the script below, with some screenshots to make things clearer:

register
verify email address
sign in
click FAVATAR
click CHOOSE
upload favatar
browse to the image saved in your computer
click SUBMIT
message will say Favatar changed.
Click CODES at the top of the page
under FAVATAR CODE, click EDIT
enter URL
enter Title
choose Category
write Description
click SUBMIT
Message: Blog info successfully updated
click CODES at the top of the page
copy script from Favicon Code
favatar codes
sign into Blogger account
in the Dashboard, click LAYOUT of the blog
click EDIT HTML
look for head tag tag
paste scrip just below the head tag tag.
preview and confirm you can see your favicon in the address bar
save template

  2. i find your blog very informative and thanks to you, i learnt a lot of tips and tricks on personalizing my own blog. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

Anyways, why do i see some blogs that has more than one RSS feed?
And sometimes when i type in my friends' name in the search box in Yahoo!, their blogs are listed in Yahoo!, but mine doesn't. How do i remedy that?

Thank you once again. Good day ;)

  4. Peter, I followed the info in your article "Favicon for your Blogger blog", and followed the instructions at My Favatar website, but the BigBlue E of IE won't let any others come through. I can't even see yours. All I get is great big blue Es. So, I guess with IE it's not possible. Is there something I've missed?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Will this also create the postage stamp avatars seen with a person's posts as well as the mini one?

    ReplyDelete
  6. So how do you get the image with your post thing going?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Whoa! I'm glad I found your blog. Great information, neat new things to tinker with, and easy to understand. Thanks for the info, you rock!

  8. hey, I should've stumbled on your site a whole lot sooner. I have already customized most of my blogspot account, but I could've done it so much faste if I had found your site, instead I had to sift through a lot of other stuff. I have three questions:

    1. How do you put the Previous:Main:Next buttons on the top of each post? It wasn't in the custom plate I am using and can it be placed at the bottom?

    2. Do you have a formatted link to your site or you wouldn't mind if I customized one.

and lastly... Will I be able to see ur comment to this in an e-mail or will I need to check it up here? Because I dunno the MO when it comes to comments, If someone comments on ur page, is it ok to comment on their comment there or on the "commenter's" blog.

I've taken up alot of ur comment space. LOL. But I do do do love your site. Helps alot of newbies like urs truly.

  9. totally works with IE, maybe you are using IE5? 6 should support it, and I'm using IE7 and I can see it now!

  10. It works fine with IE 7. I just started using it, and it tabs pages just like Firefox. Your favicon appears on the tab, but not the address window.

  11. I spoke too soon; it does indeed appear in the address bar, as well as the tabs, with IE 7.

I've put the image and link in seperately however there is a massive gap between the two on the sidebar and it looks terrible. Please help?

If I can either close the gap between the image or somehow have a website link straight abover the image I will be one happy woman!!!!

I tried pasting the same two lines of code from my old template back in, but they generate XML errors -- can you suggest how the code should look, i.e., compared to the old version

    link rel="icon" href="wherever.ico"

    ?

I am asking because many visitors ask questions or comment on things that are not related to the the post content.

The only text box I can think of where you can draw the favicon into the the built-in search box in the Yahoo toolbar or the Google toolbar. I tried doing that and what happened was it took me to a search engine result page showing 1 result (link).

I am always interested in new things and I hope you can clarify.

Did a test - Favicon for blog: Test. No luck. That site only generate a .ico format file from a .jpg or .gif image file but need access to root directory which to me means access to the server. For blogs hosted by Blogger, we have no access to the server, and uploading a .ico image file via Blogger as well as Photobucket failed.

Are your blogs self hosted? If you have succeeded, how did you do it. I have never, and will never host blogs on my own, so no practical experience.

What browser do you use. The favicon may not show in some browser. We bloggers by default are webmaster responsible for how our blog looks on the web, and webmaster should have may browsers to check how their blog looks like in other browsers. This is only one small reason why I have 6 browsers, of which FireFox with Google toolbar is my favourite. For more reasons, see

  67. Hi Jan,

Mine is gone too. The sites that host the .ico image probably found it tough going and may have given up. I don't know. Got to check. If so, looks like we have to look for alternatives. Things on the web are never static. Websites don't stay online forever. If someone started a website hoping to make some money and is not making sufficient, or even worst, losing money, it is highly likely the website will be shut down.

Once I have done that, I am going to write up. A file host that allow hot linking is not easy to find. Nearly all the file host only allow one to upload and store files that you can put a link for others to download, so your link is very useful and should be made known to bloggers. When I do the write up, I will like to acknowledge your contribution, must likely by your name and a link to your blog if you have made that plus your profile public. Please let me have your response as some don't like their name mentioned, etc.

See comment by Medinasidonia who said he/she has found a solution. You will need to have an image with extension .ico and have it hosted ON THE WEB and Medinasidonia have found the host which allows that (hot-linking). Try it and give use back feedback. 91. Thanks for the tip! For my blog I had to add the line after the
b:include tag (ie just before the title tag), otherwise it gets overwriten by blogger's own favicon!

  92. Thanks so much for this post! I was wondering if you could help me though. I got my favicon up a few days ago using your tutorial but now it's not showing up on my computer. All of my friends can see it on theirs so I know it's still there but it just doesn't show up now on mine where it did before. Could you help me? I know it shouldn't matter if others can see it but it's bugging me. Thanks!

  93. This is an old post. Refer to the updated Favicon generator and host and if you still have trouble, refer to Fix for missing favicon.

  94. Hi Peter

I've found that this often causes people problems - hence, I've created http://www.Favicons4free.com as a simple solution.

It's still early days but I hope that it helps someone.

    All the Best

  108. You can do it without much need to know HTML etc. Just use a graphic program to create the .ico graphic or use a the favicon generator and host then paste the code in the right place (just before </head> (Fix for missing favicon

  109. Just two steps to create a very high quality favicon.
    1. Design your favicon image using your very favorite image editor - either Photoshop or MS Paint, or anything. Let the image be in 100x100 pixels size.
    2. Browse to http://www.consultsarath.com/#!/favicon/ and upload your image, there you get you great favicon.

Please share the link if you find I am true.
