What to do when you don't see new posts on your blog

UPDATE 7 November 2006: There is a tip to add a ? to the end of the URL to see updated post, but I have found that it does not always work. I had to resort to viewing the post/blog with different browsers or click F5, shift+F5 or ctrl+F5.

"I can't get any new posts to show up on my blog. They show up as having published, but won't post to my blog."

Questions like these crop up very frequently on forum. Sometimes, changes have been changed to the template and have been previewed, saved and republished successfully, but the changes are not reflected on the blog when you view it. When you face problem like these, perhaps they are just due to a cache problem. Try adding a ? to the end of the blog URL into the address bar and press the ENTER key. (This tip was given by Rose DesRochers). For example, like this: http://bloggerfordummies.blogspot.com/?. Or press ctrl+F5 or ctrl+Refresh. If you see the new posts or the new changes, then it is confirmed it is only due to a cache problem. I personally have used it before, and most of the time it works, but sometimes, it doesn't. In that case, you can try other methods.

There is another way to test to see if your problem is due to browser cache. Change to another browser to view that blog. If you see the new post/s, then it is due to browser cache. BTW if you are like the majority of surfers who use only Internet Explorer, this is a good excuse to add other browsers to your computer. Install FireFox, especially FireFox with the Google toolbar. You can read more about FireFox and also install it from this site: What is FireFox and why you should be using it (close new window to get back to this page). If you need more convincing, particularly if you are a Blogger blogger, have a look at the following posts:
How to get the PageRank of your blog and also other sites easily (close new window to get back to this page)
What to do when you can't see new post/s or changes to the template (close new window to get back to this page)
A better way to do spell check for Blogger blogs Click "BACK" button to get back to this page)
Testing spell check for Blogger Beta (close new window to get back to this page).

If it is a browser cache problem, you have nothing to worry about as others will be able to view the new posts. The problem only exists on your computer. If you want that resolved too, try clearing the cache (temporary Internet files). See bottom of the post on how to do that. It is a good idea to occasionally clear your cache, but do keep in mind that you may temporarily have to deal with minor inconveniences like a page downloading slower, etc.

If it isn't a cache problem, check to see that your new post have not been saved as a draft, because if it is saved as a draft, it will not be shown. The solution then is obvious. Publish that draft.

Clearing the cache

Internet Explorer

If you are using IE6, to clear the cache, on the menu bar, click TOOLS, an int the drop-down menu, select "Internet Options". The Internet Options box will open to the General tab (see screenshot)

In the section :Temporary Internet Files", click the DELETE FILES button.

FireFox

On the menu bar click TOOLS, then click on CLEAR PRIVATE DATA from the pull down menu, (see screenshot below):
FireFox: clear private data
When you click that, a pop-up will appear. Tick "CACHE". You may also clear things like browsing history, etc, but it may mean that the convenience of being able to select a page already visited before from a list of choice as you begin to type in an URL in the address bar will no longer be present.

  1. Good one, Peter! Caches and cookies are often a problem for newbies.

Perhaps it would be useful for many to make a post on "clearing the cache, cookies and temporary Internet files", maybe as a second part for this one or linked to this and other posts -Template changes, etc.

  2. That can't be the only problem in my sister's situation. Everyone that views her site has a problem. She's done over 10 posts and it keeps only showing 3. But if you go look in her dashboard, you'll see that her posts are still there. Sometimes when you type in her address http://capetownamazing6.blogspot.com you'll see all her posts but 90% of the time you won't. The page won't fully load. Other people say the same thing about her site. CAn you help me?

  4. Thanks for this post. I had the exact same problem. I added the ? at the end of the blog url and it worked as you said it would. So now I only need to figure out how to clear out the cache, cookies and temporary Internet files. Think you could do a post on that? Thanks for your help anyway and this is a great blog.

  9. Hi eloon,

I tried to get to your blogs and managed to open Chinese Character. Was this the blog you were refering to or to others? If so, it seem to open OK. I couldn't open the other blog and typed http://myboringgarden.blogspot.com/? and got this message. Not Found
The requested URL was not found on this server. Please visit the Blogger homepage or the Blogger Knowledge Base for further assistance. If this is the blog you are refering to, it isn't a browser cache problem. You need to contact Blogger support, explaining in detail your problem. 16. Hi Kelly,

Well, if the ? trick does not work, then it is not a cache problem. It may be on Blogger end. At other time, I would have suggested contacting Blogger support, but at the moment, they are directing all their resources to Blogger Beta. So unless your problem is related to Blogger Beta, your next best be, I suppose, is to pose your problem at the Google Blogger Help group.

  17. New question...The way I publish my edit is not the way it appears on my Blog page. Any idea why? I'd like my writing to appear beside my pictures or underneath, and it all clumps together when published. What do I do blog master?

    ReplyDelete
  18. First, you got to make sure that CONVERT LINE BREAKS is set to YES. You can do that by going to SETTINGS > FORMATTING.

Second, you are probably setting your pictures to display on the side. When you do that, it is very hard to control the way the actual text will appear on the web. If you set the pictures to display in the centre, you will have better control.

  19. Seriously...you're good. Blogger should probably pay you.

    Hi Peter,
Really useful hints and tricks. Thank you! I tried the "?" solution, and it worked so far, but emptying the cache (which I did several times) hasn't changed a thing. So, even though other people may be able to see the blog displayed correctly, I still can't. Do you have any hints or ideas on that? Thx again, Eva.

  29. Hi I just deleted my old blog and updated a new one, but i used the same URL. the problem is the same old page keeps on turning up despite the new one being showing up should i add a '?' at the end. any tips?

    ReplyDelete
  30. "I just deleted my old blog and updated a new one, but i used the same URL." I am a non-native speaker and I am not very sure I am understanding your question correctly. You said you deleted your blog and started a new blog with the same URL, and you have published some new posts (assumed). Then you are very lucky because bloggers who deleted their blog often that URL snatched by spamblog to use for their nefarious (hope I got this spelling correct) activities. If you are that lucky person, managed to get back your old sub-domain back, and you did publish some new posts with the same URL but saw the old posts instead on the web, then you should try adding that ? to the end of the URL, or try F5 or ctrl+F5, etc. and see what you get. Even better, use a different browser from the one you normally use. If you are using only Internet Explorer, and this seem to be the case for the great majority of surfers. I strongly recommend you get Firefox, particularly Firefox with Google toolbar. You can get info as well as download and install Firefox with Google toolbar from this site: What is Firefox and why you should be using it.

I noticed that this problem occurred only after I switched to the new blogger version. Wondering if you can help again? Thanks!

  37. Hi Ying,

Can you see the post listed in the Dashboard?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Hi Peter, yes, I can see it there, it is not a draft. Adding a ? after my url allows me to see it.

Does it mean I did not clear my cache properly/completely?

    ReplyDelete
  39. If this is the case, your post is published properly and others can see it without having to clear cache, put ? at the end of the URL, etc, so don't worry about the little details.

This is a "problem" of the way computers work, and not something that Blogger have to solve. Computers store pages so that when you access them, they load faster. It is not Blogger's "fault".

  44. I'm also having this problem. I tried putting the "?" at the end and it worked. I cleared cache of all my browsers (IE, firefox, Opera) but it still didn't work. I tried to see my blog using other computers and I can't see any new modification without "?" in the address (I've change my layout and post new posts).
When I put "?", I can see all my post there (4 posts), however in Dashboard, it states that there're 3 posts only (but the last update time is when I post the lastest post, which didn't show up). I didn't delete post.
Do you know what can be wrong here?

  45. Sound like a complicated problem to me. You say you can see the post when you add a ? at the back of the URL. That means the post have been published. 47. Hi Dental Pain,

I check your site. The first page is AmeriPlan with a video as the main content. Then I see the tabs at the top of the page. Your site don't look like a blog to me. All the tabs seem to be working as they bring me to a new page with different content. I don't know what is your problem.

Whatever it is, I think you should try different browsers. There are lots of browsers. I use Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, Flock and they are free. You should try that. Firefox is recommended by Blogger and is my favourite browser. You can get that by clicking "Get FireFox with Google toolbar for better browsing". For the others, you can try googling for them.

I just visited your blog post and I am going to leave a comment there to show you there is no problems with comments in your blog. I don't know what is your problem?

BTW you should read Make active (clickable) links in posts and comments. I have to delete your original comment because you put there a long individual post page URL (permalink) which is not active, became a long unbroken line which can cause problems.

That is the default in a blog homepage. The comments will not be displayed. Just image a homepage with 7 posts and in each posts, there are hundreds of comments in them and all of them are displayed in that homepage (I have come across posts like that, including some of mine, but probably not touching 100 yet). Imagine how long that homepage would be. Try this homepage for example: Blogger for Dummies or click the link "Blogger Tips and Tricks" above to get to the homepage of this blog. I recently posted something about someone (I found out my boyfriend was cheating on me and childishly had a moment of weakness) and 30 minutes later deleted it and it is still showing up if you search by his name. I am not a hateful person and do not want my immaturity to reflect on him if a boss or someone searches him in the future. I realize I brought this on myself but if someone could please tell me how to make sure a deleted post does not show up in a google search (it comes up as a result but you cant see the full post when you click on it) I would greatly appreciate it!
