What to do when you don't see the toolbar and the EDIT HTML and COMPOSE tabs in Blogger post editor

I first came across the experience of not seeing the post editor toolbar and the EDIT HTML and COMPOSE tabs in the post editor of Blogger Beta using Opera browser. For reasons too long to describe here, I have ended up using Opera (even though it is not recommended as Blogger recommend IE and FireFox). (I use FireFox for my more regularly updated Blogger blogs). However, there are other times when I get into the post editor of a Blogger Beta blog, also in Opera, I could see them all. So this seem to be an on and off affair. I find changing browser help. (changing browser is my natural reaction to a lot of problems. See this post on the advantages of having more than one browser in your computer: Why you should be using more than one browser. (Click the "back" button to get back to this page)

I have also encountered this problem in other browsers, however, I have noticed the problem occur most frequently in the Opera browser. A reader of my blog Blogger Tips and Tricks contacted me with the same problem and I have adviced her to change browser and/or clear private data (cache, cookies). She reported back that it helped her solve her problem. Another member of the Blogger Help Forum also complained of the same problem and I have given the same advice and that too has helped her.

Others have said that doing a refresh will help.

  1. What is the best template for Adsense?I dont know.
    My blog is nanopibia.blogspot.com

  2. What is the best template for Adsense. My blog is nanopibia.blogspot.com

  3. That is a hard question to answer. There are so many factors to take into consideration. For example, if there are not still 10-20% of visitors using small screen (600x800 screen resolution) to this blog, I would use a 3 column template. (How do I know that? I use statcounter, a hit counter which give quite a bit of statistics about my visitors, but which doesn't give private information if any visitor to my site is worried about that). If you want to know how to install a hit counter to your blog, go to How do I track visitors to my site. If you happen to be using Blogger Beta, then go to Blogger Beta: Adding advertisement, hit counters, etc.. The reason why I don't want to use a 3 column template for this blog is because if I change to a template with 3 column template, depending on the design of the template, visitors with 800x600 resolution will either have to scroll to see the rest of the page, or the appearance of the site will change to something I, and especially my visitors, may not like. This may put off my visitors and may discourage them from coming back again.

Why do I prefer a 3 column template? With a 3 column template, I can put more stuff above above the fold, the part of the page which a visitor see without having to scroll when they first get to your site. That is the best place to put your ads. It also enable me to put, for example, my ads on the left sidebar, and the profile, Previous Posts, Archives, link list, etc on the right sidebar, or to put some referral buttons right at the top of the right sidebar if I want more visibility for that. If you want to see an examples of 3 column template with ads, surf over to Choosing and caring for digital cameras, or this one: TV Network. If you happen to be using large screen and you want to see how vistors with small screen will see the site, type or paste this into the address bar: javascript:top.resizeTo(800,600) and press the ENTER key. The second example will give a better result. If you want to know how to do that, surf over to Blogger for Dummies is now 3 column, and for the second example, go to Blogger template tutorial.

  4. I know this is an old post but I Googled "missing blogger toolbar" and somehow ended up here. I recently switched to a MAC and all of a sudden my toolbar (in blogger, when I'm trying to post a new blog...) is missing- no option for me to change font size or do bold or italics or add photos or video. I downloaded Firefox as suggested, here. And that isn't working either. Any ideas?

  5. Hi Stacy,

Flock, a browser based on Mozilla Firefox is also cross platform and so should work for MAC. Since I started having problems with Opera (Cannot sign into Blogger with Opera, I have switched to Flock and have had no problem so far. Perhaps that might help (no guarantee). Just type "download flock" into the search box above, tick the radio button beside "WEB" and search.

That is as far a I can try to help. To your success. BTW feedback highly appreciated - fail or succeed.

What a grateful blogger did for me
(no one should feel obligated. Everthing completely voluntary. However, by doing so, you may also help your visitors find helpful information and help. You may even pick up various ways of linking sites there too)

  6. Thank you, Peter.
I do appreciate you taking the time to respond to my inquiry.
I didn't end up having to try the idea you suggested because somehow the problem fixed itself!

    Thanks again,

  7. Hi Stacy,

Glad your problem solved. It was mentioned (hardly visible) "So this seem to be an on and off affair" in the post, meaning the problem can go off by itself, but for me, rather than waiting another hour or another day, it is so easy to change to Web browsers. I fix so many problems with that strategy that I now have almost two handful of web browsers in my computer and intending to add more.

A blogger is by default a webmaster who is in charge of the appearance and workings of a website which include a blog, and a webmaster should have many web browsers.

Don't know if that would encourage you to install more browsers into your computer, but for me, I have no problem, and I would recommend it to anyone without hesitation. But there are some who are so fearful, there are more than satisfied with that lousy Internet Explorer which only got better when Microsoft finally caught up with FireFox after a very long delay by introducing IE7.
