Blogger Beta: How to add AdSense or permanent Sticky Post at the top of the main column

In the standard Blogger Beta templates and also Ramani's 3 column beta template, there is no provision for putting AdSense ads at the top of the main column. You can make a sticky post (close new window/tab to get back to this page) by playing around with the date/time. However, the disadvantage of this method is that it does not last forever. When the "post dated" date is reach, you will have to post date it again. This will change the URL of the post, and that means dead links and starting all over again with search engines for that post. Update: Blogger now no longer changes individual post page URL (permalink, so now you can change the dates, post-date it as many times as you want, no problem.

Here is a method to put AdSense ad at the top of the main column (see Business, Travel and Leisure (close new window/tab to return to this page), or to make a permanent "sticky post" that will remain forever at the top of main page and all other pages of the blog. See blog Motivation and Self Improvements (close new window.tab to return to this page). In that blog, try clicking on the topics in CATEGORIES or the ARCHIVES in the sidebar and observe what is present at the top of the main column.

Here are more examples:

Guide to Malaysia where I have put a searchbar at the top of every page of the blog.

Dummies Guide to Google Blogger where I have added a searchbar as well as a link to the homepage on top of every page of the blog.

Adding a "Add a Page Element" widget to the main column

Sign into Dashboard, and in the relvant blog, click LAYOUT, then click EDIT HTML. In the Template Editor, look for this block of codes:
<div id='main-wrapper'>
<b:section class='main' id='main' showaddelement='no'>
<b:widget id='HTML10' locked='false' title='' type='HTML'/>
<b:widget id='Blog1' locked='false' title='Blog Posts' type='Blog'/>
</b:section>
</div>

Look particularly for showaddelement='no' and change it to showaddelement='yes', then save the template. Click "Page Elements" to get to the LAYOUT and observe that an additional "Add a Page Element" have been added to the top of "BLOG POSTS".

To add Adsense, generate the Adsense script from your Adsense account (in my example above, I have chosen the "Large rectangle" format) to the top of every page of the main colum, click the extra "Add a Page Element, then in the pop-up, select HTML/Javascript, click "Add to blog", then paste the Adsense script into the box and click "Save changes".

To make a "sticky post", after clicking "Add a Page Element", select TEXT instead and click "Add to blog. Then type in your text into the box. To avoid the text running into the sidebar, you will have to use the return key when you come to the edge of the box.

  1. Peter, your website has some great information.

    I have a couple questions about adding Adsense in the new blogger. I was able to add a 468x60 text banner at the top of my posts in the old blogger but I can't do it in the new blogger for some reason. Do you know what I should do?

    Also, do you know have to add a text banner after only the top post on each page? Thanks.

    - Jim

  2. I thought this post shows how to do that, add adsense at the top of the post on each post? Howver, 468px will be too wide for this blog. Don't know what template you are using, but if the width of the main column of your blog is less than 468, you may have to add it to the Header instead. For that you will have to follow the instruction in this post Adding graphic, etc., to the New Blogger (formerly Blogger Beta) blog Header

  5. Hello, I want to put my adsense vertically in the empty space on the sidebar opposite all of my added elements. I am clueless about HTML, but I'm guessing I would have to do something to my template to get anything to go there, then put google's code in the template? Can you help?
    Thanks a bunch!

  6. Hi Lindsay,

    What template are you using - old classic Blogger template or the New Blogger (formerly Blogger Beta) template? Also, what do you mean by having "adsense vertically in the empty space on the sidebar opposite all of my added elements"?

    It would be helpful if you provide a link to your blog.

    Well, I did some more digging and found your referral to beautiful beta who gave great instructions on adding a second sidebar. That was exactly what I was looking for. I just finished tweaking it and I feel so proud!
    Thanks for being here!

  8. Hi Peter - using this scripting would you be able to place banner ads on top of the main post or only Adsense ads?

    Thank you very much -

  9. Hi Michael,

    You should be able to put a banner as well as long as they fit into the width of the main column.

  11. HI,

    How I add image add by using New Blogger.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Do you mean adding an image in a post? If so, it is exactly as in old classic Blogger. See Uploading and manipulating photos in Blogger.

    If you are asking about adding a photo in the header, refer to Adding an image to your New Blogger Header.

  15. Hi Sadish,

    Try typing or copy pasting
    javascript:top.resizeTo(800,600)
    into the address bar and press key Enter. You will find the window resized to 800x600 and that is how a person sees your blog. If you do that, your ads at the top of your right sidebar is hidden. Plus your Large Rectangle ad at the bottom of the ads is not visible when visitor first land on your site. Do you have a hit counter like Statcounter
    to check on your visitors. That is how I find out that 5-20% of my visitors still use the 800x600 screen res. That is why I am using Ramani's 3 column template. See also What is the best template to use for your blog.

    Regarding the Page Element in the main column, I like to use it for a sitesearch box so that visitors can easily search for topics in my blog. For the footer, I like to use the Leaderboard. That ad is less desirable as it is below the fold, like your large triangle and will normally get less clicks.

  17. Hi Dex,

    It is very hard to see from your blog (page source).

    So far, 2 persons have asked for help - one from US who has offered to pay
    and 1 from Argentina who has offered to pay a donation (any amount, no amount too small) to my PayPal account plus links to my blogs. They have both given me the username and password to their Blogger account, the work for the 1 from Argentina was just finished this morning. I asked them to change the password after the work is finished.

    If you want you can do the same.

  19. Hi Dex,

    Visited your blog. I suppose TOC refers to Table of Content, and it appears to me that the TOC is at the top of the left sidebar rather than the top of the main column, which I think you used for your Amazon banner. Did I miss something?

    Thank you so much for helping me with my Blogger.com SEO and layout. Of all the posts on these subjects, yours were by far the best and easiest to understand.

    Thanks a million!

  30. Hi Peter,

    I'm getting back to my blog now after a long absence and updating my adsense as well. Your directions were perfect in showing how to get an add under my main column. I have 2 questions about fine tuning this: 1- Is it possible to centre the ad? Right now it is left aligned. and 2- Is it possible to make it appear under the first post on the main page instead of all the way at the bottom?

    Thanks so much! I briefly considered switching to Wordpress because going forward I wanted the ability to edit comments and blogger still doesn't provide that, but then I thought where would I be without your advice?

    All the best,
    Kristin

  31. Hi Peter - You can ignore those two questions I posted. The new (at least new to me!) monetize tab walked me through adding AdSense below the post and it centred it automatically. It added more AdSense elements that I didn't want but I went ahead and deleted them individually. It was very helpful to read in another of your posts that AdSense only allows three ads per page otherwise I would have been panicking about the disappearance of the custom ad blocks I had put in before. They re-appeared after I deleted the extra two that were automatically generated.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Kristin, you can center anything by surrounding it with <div style="text-align:center;"> and </div>

    ReplyDelete
  33. Also, if you want it under the post, you can sign into Dashboard > Design
    then in the Blog Posts section, click EDIT, scroll down and tick [ ] Adsense between posts

  34. Thanks, It was really helpful for me, I've followed your tips and now my ads are inside my blog posts you can check out on FarmVille Legends and open any post and see the result.
