Blogger Beta: How to get rid of those irritating editing icon

NOTE: A reader has complained very bitterly about having those quick editing icons in his private blog. If you want to permanently remove them, skip the rest of the post and refer to the link at the bottom of the post.

From a post in the Google Blogger Help group: "Why do the editing tools show up in each section of my blog when I'm not doing any editing?? They keep doing that....I have done everything I can think of to get rid of them but they are still there!!!"

He is referring to those wrench and screwdriver icon you see in the screenshot below:
Blogger Beta editing icon

You will see this in your blogs when you are logged into your Blogger Beta account. To most people, they look ugly, and that is why we are getting so many beta bloggers complaining in the Blogger Help group.

They are meant to be a convenience for beta bloggers to easily edit their blogs. These icons will not be visible to other surfers or even to you when you are logged out of the Blogger Beta account. You need not be worried that your blog will look this way (ugly) to other surfers as they will not see it.

So the answer to the question is, if you really don't want to see the icons on your blogs, make sure you are not logged into you Blogger beta account.

Someone with a private blog have complained very bitterly about seeing those quick editing icons in his private blog. If you want to remove them PERMENTLY, the instructions are at Permanently remove quick editing icons in New Blogger blog

I think they are great, since I am a moody guy...I change stuff all the time.

    Yup, it's strangely necessary..

  3. That's not a perfect solution. If you have a private blog, you must be logged into your blogger account. Thus, you will see the wrenches.

    This is simply not true.

Do a search in edit html mode of your template (make sure to check off "expand widget templates) - search for all instances of "b:include name='quickedit'" (in less than and greater than brackets)
and delete this straight up. You only need to delete this one line (there is no closing tag)

This will get rid of all instances of the edit buttons.

  6. Hi Cooked Art,

I am a retired scientist. I rely on test results. I have more than 1 Blogger accounts. Nothing sinister about that. This posts Firefox with Google toolbar for your blog have explanation for that. Anyway, I am now signed into Blogger account for this blog with Firefox. I have other blogs with different Blogger accounts.

I just checked Testing Blogger Beta (now New Blogger) and Enviroman Says on this browser where I am not signed into those Blogger accounts. Note that they have different profile photos. I don't see any edit icons (pencil icons, screwdriver and spanner icons) in those blogs.

This bears out what the post says - if you are not signed in, you wouldn't see the edit icons.

  7. I agree with Kenneth. I have a private blog. Why do I have to log out of it to view it as intended? This makes no sense. 300 virtual ducats to the person who invents a way to remove this eyesore from author views!

  8. Okay 300 ducats to cooked art, his method worked. The other anwers are basically saying, 'Don't worry -- nobody who uses your blog will see these eyesores but you.' Which seems like an odd thing to tell me, since I will be using my blog more than anyone else, and I don't actually enjoy looking at eyesores any more than they would.

  9. Hi Paul,

I am afraid I have to disagree with you. Those screwdriver and spanner plus pencil icons are a great convenience, especially if you are the type who often have to edit what is in your blog. Eg. all HTML/Javascript Page Elements will just display HTML/Javascript in the LAYOUT if you don't put anything in the title, which is very common. Now with these icon, all you need to do is to go to your blog, identify which one you want to edit, click on the icon and you will straight away be editing your Page Element. Similar with posts. Have you ever have a blog with lots of posts. With the pencil icon, once you are on that post (when you are responding to a comment and need to edit that particular post for example), just click the pencil icon and you will be able to edit the post without having to search through long list of post in the Dashboard.

What is important is how the blog appear to visitors, not how we see it.

  11. Thanks, Peter. I don't disagree with anything you said about the utility of those icons. That doesn't make them look any nicer -- they are out of theme and just don't look good. I don't need the utility -- I'm not saying they should be abolished but it should definitely be easier to remove them. That way we can both have what we want. BTW perhaps you missed the fact that my blog is private. I have no visitors. I am the only visitor. Therefore, your statement that the visitors are the only ones who matter either applies only to me or it applies to no one. This is what I intended to point out.

  13. Well Peter, I didn't think I was being 'bitter', lol. I just stuck to my guns and wouldn't let you convince me that my tastes are not important. I just call that knowing what you want. Anyway, thanks very much for the tip, but I solved this almost right away using cooked art's first suggestion, above. It works! Can't vouch for yours as I no longer have any reason to try it.

  14. Hi Paul,

Thanks for drawing my attention to cooked art's comment and solution. Well, I cannot claim to be the smartest cookie on earth, there will alway be someone better.

But those icons plus the "New Post" and "Customize" links are so useful, it leave me wondering why any blogger will want to get rid of them. Minus them, editing a post or the Layout or template is so much more tedious.

Well as long as the 2 of you are happy.
