Should links to external sites open in new Windows

Got a tip about a site that offers polls (without the irritating pop-ups that normally comes with a Bravenet feature) from Sherry of Beta Blogger Resources who suggested thypoll.

I have previously done a similar poll at Poll: Does making links open in new windows piss you off? on whether links opening in new windows irritates readers, but did it using the comment system for feedback, but the overall conclusion from that "poll" was that most prefer links to open in new windows.

thypoll allows one to actually embed the poll in the post, so I just thought I would do the poll again:

Note: This is a poll as well as a post about how to conduct polls, so I have a further note to add. Originally I typed

"Links in my blogs open in new windows. Does that irritates you?"

in a single line, and after embedding the poll in the post, I found that the question extent into the right sidebar, so I redid the poll and put the question as:

"Links in my blogs open in new windows.<br /> Does that irritates you?"

Now you see that the question no longer extend into the right sidebar.

Update 22 April 2007: DarkUFO commented pointing out that there is another site that offers poll. I did a new poll both as a real poll as well as to test what DarkUFO recommended and the second poll is at Is New Blogger an improvement over old classic Blogger? (click "BACK" button to get back to this page). Result of that test? I found out that Blogflux (the poll recommended by DarkUFO produced a poll where clicking on "Results" resulted in being able to see the results in the same post, unlike Thypoll, which opens the result in a new window.

Update 14 August 2007: I am trying out a new site for making poll. See Anther way to add Poll to your blog post.

  1. Peter,
I took the poll and voted, yes they do irritate me. When I first started blogging I preffered the link to open in a new page, that way I didn't lose the page I was on. Things have changed and now I'm used to using the back button like most people. :)

BTW....thanks for the mention in your post.

  2. Hi again,

You should use these free Ajax polls.

    http://polls.blogflux.com/

They display the results without opening any windows.

I use them on my Lost Polls site.

    Hope this helps.

  3. Hi DarkUFO,

Thanks for the extra information. I may check it up and do a write up. If I do, I will acknowledge your contribution with a link to your site if you don't object.

  4. That is very kind of you Peter.

The Blogflux polls, imho the best free ones on the net. I've been using them for about a year and they are very robust.

  5. Regarding the new window option, I think it depends, sometimes I want to stay on the page and I want the new window. Sometimes I don't care.

I think this is a moot question these days since the invention of tabbed blogging.

If it opens in a tab, it doesn't bother me at all. Back in the day when it popped up a new window that was annoying but using firefox or IE or opera etc.

    Best regards,

  7. Hi Alex,

Sorry if you got irritated by my email. However, that email was sent from my mailbox which was used for my blog visitors to contact me, and the majority were request for help, which I have willingly provided. I don't know if you were one of them

I had thought that, in return for the favour freely granted, getting one email to try to get more people to respond to a poll is not too much to ask. Anyway, if you don't want to receive mail from me, all you need to do is to reply to that mail.

  8. Hi Alex,

Another thing. Right in the beginning of my email, I had stated that if you do not wish to receive any email from me, please to reply and state so. However, you did not reply, and you do not have a public profile, and I have no means to delete your email address from my address book.

  9. Hi Peter,

I took the poll and voted that they do not irritate me, because that was the best suited answer.

However, I do prefer links referring to pieces on the same website to open in the same window, but links referring to other websites to open in a new window.

  11. Hi Peter,

Thank you for including me. If it's from you I don't mind if you spam my email address. You have help me on so many occasions that I lost count. I'm a grateful person, in return for the favour freely granted, getting one email to try to get more people to respond to a poll is not too much to ask. This is my way to thank you.

As to answer your question, I prefer it to open to a new window. I wish more Web or BlogMaster used the "_blank" tag.
