Change "Comment" to "Leave Comment" or anything you want

This post describe the old ways. For an easier way, refer to Blogger Edit Blog posts options

Some bloggers are not satisfied with the simple "comments" at the bottom of a post which you have to click to view or leave a comment. They want to change it to something else like "Leave Your Comment" for example. To see a blog where that has been changed, surf over to Google AdSense Signup Page. Look at the bottom of the only post. The standard "comment" have been changed to "Leave Your Comment".

This is how you do it. Click TEMPLATE tab, then the EDIT HTML sub-tab to get to the template editor. First, backup your template plus the Page Elements. If you don't know how to do it, refer to Backing and changing New Blogger template. Once you have done it, tick the "Expand Widgets Template" and wait for it to fully expand. Then look for this line of code:

<data:top.commentLabel/><b:else/><data:post.numComments/> <data:top.commentLabelPlural/></b:if></a>

To help you find the code, click ctrl+F and type or copy-paste part or all of the code you are trying to find into the "Find" field at the taskbar at the bottom of the page, and click "Next". The code will be located and highlighted.

Another way to do is is to click inside the template editor window, press ctrl+A to highlight all the codes, press ctrl+C or right-click and select "copy" to copy the expanded template into clipboard, open a Notepad file, paste the template into it. Click Edit > Select All in the menu bar at the top to highlight all the template. Click Edit > Find in the menu bar, and copy-paste part or all of the code you want to find. For example, paste <data:top.commentLabelPlural/> into the "Find what" box, and then click "Find Next".

Replace <data:top.commentLabelPlural/> (highlighted in red) with "Leave Your Comment". Click inside the Notepad file and press ctrl+A to highlight all the edited template, click ctrl+C to copy into clipboard (or click EDIT > SELECT ALL in the menu bar followed by EDIT > COPY). Go back to the template editor. The whole of the original template should still be highlighted. Click DELETE key to delete the original template, then press ctrl+A to paste the edited template in the clipboard into the template editor window (or right-click inside the template editor window and select "Paste"). Click PREVIEW at the bottom of the page and if satisfied, click "Save Template".

If you want to check, click VIEW BLOG to confirm that the standard "comments" have been changed to "Leave Your Comment" (or anything else you had chosen).

  3. Hi Usiku,

That is useful information. I had previously use EDIT > FIND IN THIS PAGE in the menu bar and found it didn't work. I just found out recently. See update at Making Link List open in new window. Thanks for the tip and I will probably need to update this post.

  4. hi sir, I coudnt do the change of the "comment"on my template. Honestly, I tried searching for the line on the template but there's not such line that match with the ones inthe template. Most probably, its because of the Haloscan since it was already integrated on my template. Hope you could help me thanks! you can email me at fjordz.allego.hiraya@gmail.com thanks!!

  5. Hi fjordan,

I have used Haloscan commenting system in deomonstration blog, never in main blogs like this I. I prefer Blogger because if I moderate, and get an email to say a comment have been received, I can approve or reject direct from that email because I would normally be already logged into Blogger in another tab.

In the case of Haloscan, I have to surf over to their site, sign in, then moderate. I don't like that. However, many like the features Haloscan offers that Blogger don't, so it is really up to the blogger what he wants.

So regarding your question, if I am to check, I will have to check the template for the blog in which Haloscan had been installed. I have lots of things to do of higher priority, so I will copy-paste this comment plus the URL of this post into Notepad and save it into my "To do" files. There are lots of files there, so I don't know when I will come to act on this.

  6. Peter - I came to your blog to learn how to engage StumbleUpon into my blog. Instead I found the AddThis 'bookmark' that you place in each of your posts. I've added that widget to my posts as well. Let's see if it helps!

Thank you again for all that you do.

  7. Hi Peter,

Thanks for yet another useful post.
I have tried it in my blog and it worked great on all except my newest post.
I don't know why that is.
Could you please help me to find what I have done wrong?

    Thanks,
    Ran.

  8. Hi Ran,

I am mystified by what could be causing your problem. Perhaps if I can manage to find the time, I will retest it and see if I can spot something.

  10. Hi David,

I thought it is all explained in the post. I have tested the method before publishing the post as shown by the demonstration blog. What is the problem? If you can be more specific in your question, maybe I can help.

  11. Hi Peter, once you click on the post a comment link. you are brought to this page for example that I am commenting on right now? is there anyway to change to appearance of this?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Hi Peter, I tried moving the comments link to just below my post title using the layout editor. However, the changes are not saving! Is there something I am missing?

  13. Hi Jessakah,

Your question can best be answered with a post. Unfortunately, I am tied up with a lot of things at the moment. For example, see Long march for Justice.

I will try to make a post for you later.

  14. Hi Jessakah,

I did a quick attempt but met that dreaded error message. Tinkering with New Blogger template is tough. I may need to do further trials.

I tried dragging it in the LAYOUT to below the post title and it saved OK. But when I view the blog, comments is still at the bottom of the post. So, no luck, and I don't know why. Maybe the only way is direct through the template, which means testing.

I am tied with many things now such as:

    Long March for Justice

Yang di-Pertuan Agong: Only hope for Malaysia?

Should non-Muslim have a say over Malaysia becoming an Islamic state?

plus lots of other things waiting for me to do. This will have to wait.

  15. Hi peter, separate quesion: I would like to create the drop shadow effect under the white part of my site, onto the purple background. I do have photoshop. I would like the shadow to be even on both sides of the page, is this possible?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hi Jessakah,

    1. I am sorry I can't understand your questions

    2. I don't have Photoshop. I only use the free (and very good, to me) Irfanview and Paint (I am a cheapskate).

    3. Other than screenshots and normal photos, and sometimes create simple images, I don't do much graphic.

    Sorry, can't help here.

  20. I came across this article as I am trying to make the same change for by blog. Our blog says "comments" and then has the nunber of comments with a link. So for articles that we just post it looks like "Comments (0). The "0" in this case is a hyperlink so you can leave a comment. We feel this makes it easy to voerlook where to leave a comment so we would like to change that.

We would like to change the link to say comments or at least spell out the number or something to make it bigger and more obvious. I tried doing what you suggested, but could not find this. I could only find it for the author where it says "
    "

Do you have any ideas? I would appreacite it if I am lost. It looks like it is done though a form and having a hard time to figure out hoe to change.
