What to do with comment spam

I am sure you have got bloggers putting irrelevant comments in your posts plus links to their sites. I will show what I do when I get such comment spam.

1. I set comments to only registered users (meaning they must have a Blogger account)

2. I moderate comments, and thus have a permanent record of the comments in my Inbox together with the spammer blogger profile.

2. I use Yahoo email address to receive comment moderation email notification and set the option to display full header (giving details of IP addresses, etc).

To set Yahoo to display full header, click "Options", "General Preferences", then in the "Messages" section, tick the radio button beside "Show all headers on incoming messages"

3. Highlight all the information the the header and copy to clipboard.

4. When I get a comment spam, click the down arrow in "Forward" and select "As Inline Text", type "Reporting comment spam. Full header:" then paste the full header into the message.

5. Add "Reporting comment spam" in front of the message subject

6 Forward to abuse@blogger.com

Amazon products on spam

I have done this a few times, and hope Blogger support have the time and/or willingness to stamp this spamming out. However, I have not received any feedback from them after reporting comment spam. However, I have reported email spam to abuse@yahoo.com, abuse@gmail.com, abuse@hotmail.com and have got positive responses.

If you are using Gmail, to get the full header, at the top right of the page, click the down arrow beside "Reply" and chose "Show original" and the full header will be displayed. See screenshot below:

  1. Hi, Peter -- I have a question but cannot find a "contact me" address. So, apolgies in advance for using your comment box. My question, as a brand new blogger, is how do I keep my links from going dead because the source moved the page? Is there a way to migrate with the article. My problem arises when a newspaper has an article on its "front page," but a week later puts it in an archive. Now, I go find it and rewrite the link code. Is there a better way?

  3. How do you place the digg it icon at the right of the post? It's so neat. Mine will just go to the next line and mess up all the alignment. Thanks. At the end, I had to place it at the sidebar.

    Hi Marilyn,

I approved your first comment but it didn't get published. Why I don't know. Anyway I replied by commenting in your blog where comments are moderated, so you should have a message.

BTW I hope you don't mind me editing your email address to try to avoid email harvester and reposting your comment like it is coming from you. If you want to know how to do that, refer to What to do when you accidentally deleted comments and/or want to edit comments. This is useful but open to abuse and I have requested Blogger to remove that option which allow us to do it, but no action.

I actually prefer questions in comments as then others get to read my responses which may be useful to them.

  10. Hello. I don't have a blogspot blog. But I thought I would take a little look at what you have to say. I can't believe you keep all your comments on your computer. Why? I have thousands and thousands of comments on my blog. Keeping them all also on my computer would just seem a huge wasted of space.

Also, I don't moderate my comments except for 2 x when I got a mean comment and moderated for a week. But I also don't get spam. Why do some people get spam and others don't?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hi Maryam,

When I moderate comments, I have the record of the comment, the link to the post and the blogger Profile. If there are problem, I have a way to edit comment. Plus I use a specially created Gmail address (now changed to Yahoo because of recent problems) both of which gives almost unlimited storage plus very good and free spam filter. I am only using a small fraction of the storage space they give me. Now if storage becomes a problem, I can always delete old messages and comments but it looks like that will be way in the future.

  14. Don't you think step 1 and step 2 will discourage user to comment on the blog? I'm simply asking.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hi ChampDog,

You are perfectly correct. Those steps do discourage some from commenting. However, despite me taking those steps, I get a lot of comments in this blog, probably the majority of those who visit this blog already have a Blogger account. However, I would prefer to have less comments than to have surfers taking advantage of posting anonymously and making rude remarks, spam, etc.

Also, perhaps I should draw your attention to this post The Jews and their Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion!. This blogger allowed anonymous comments, then when someone comment as anonymous, he/she is called chicken. If you do go to that post, do read the comments.

Another thing about allowing anonymous comments. It can be abuse. Try settin your blog to allow anonymous comment and I can comment in your post, perhaps leaving abusive or slandering comments but make it seem to come from another person, perhaps even you yourself. Want to take me up on that? If you are prepared, set it to allow anyone to comment and let me have the URL of your blog.

  16. Hey Peter, thanks for demonstrate this in my blog. I do not aware of we can actually do it this way.

Anyway let's share my experience, I used to have spam in my comment. What I usually do is to remove them manually(i.e. just like what I did to your post in my blog). If the spam is getting more, then I will only enable the moderation for a certain period of time. Then later, I disable moderation back until today (almost a year) you're the first one to spam my comment. :)

Reason I'm doing this is because I do get more comments than enable the moderation. Perhaps my blog reader is too little as compared to high traffic blog. Therefore, the spam comment still not an issue for me. Perhaps one day when my blog gets high traffic, I will understand what you're trying to say and will do as what you have suggested.

By the way, do you know a way to subscribe to comments so that its can notify the reader directly for new updated comment in blogger? It will be great if have a solution to this. I like this feature but the blogger doesn't support that.

  17. Hi ChampDog,

I am sorry, Blogger do not have the feature to enable you to be notified of response to comments. You can suggest it to them:

    Hi Kim,

Thanks for the compliments. I check your blog. You mentioned an award? I didn't see an award? I saw links to Chuck's blog and Amanda's (Blogger Buster) blog there, but not mine :-(

Anyway, thanks for the kind words.

  23. i black_mamba,

Ribuan terima kasih (that is a thousand, but by right should be a million, thanks. Looks like I will have to tag another 7 bloggers, of which I already have some in mind, but may take some time to do because there are some 10 over tasks with datelines waiting for me plus quite a number of "to do" list to take care of. This is another addition. I will have to co-paste this into my "to do list" and hope it don't take too long.

  24. Thanks for the great tips. I just used abuse@blogger.com (which I did not find in my search of blogger help). I contacted the comment company 4 times and they are now up to #6 on the same dumb comment they paste/post in about once a week. So I made a post about it and it's #2 now if you do a search on their name, my post on their comment SPAM comes up #2.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Ray,

I am afraid I do not understand. What is this #6 and #2?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Peter,

#6 refers to the number of Spam posts I got from a wonderful site. They just did Spam Comment #6 today. Which, as usually got deleted pretty quickly by me, and in a new twist reported to blogger - thanks for the tip on blogger!

#2 refers to the Google position, page 1, of my post about their spam comment on my blog, when you do a search on their company name in Google.

    Your online book looks great!

My wife (from Taiwan) and I started our online bookstore because of our frustration on finding material to bring up our daughter bilingually. 11 years later and our daughter's now 14 and fluent in Chinese and English. Her spoken Chinese is good, Taiwanese - needs practice, English - better than me.

    Sincerely

    Ray
