Accidentally delete blog: What to do

Accidentally deleting blogs are not rare occurrences as in the default BASIC tab for Blogger SETTINGS, the DELETE button is just below the SAVE SETTINGS button.

Previously, once you delete a blog, the blog URL become available for anyone to grab, and spammers have automated programs to quickly grab the URL of a deleted blog to use for spam blog (splog), taking advantage of any existing PageRank of a blog rather than starting from scratch. That was the reason for publishing this post - Why you should not delete a blog and what to do when you accidentally delete a blog or change the blog URL.

However, Blogger has wised up to this and now if you delete a blog, the blog URL is reserved for you to claim back later. So if you have accidentally deleted a blog, what you can do is to create a new blog using the old blog URL. Now I myself have not tried this when this was made known to me, and hope to do that one day and report the result at Testing Blogger Beta (now New Blogger). In the meantime, if you had accidentally deleted your blog, try this and please report the result by leaving a comment for everyone's benefits.

What if you change the blog URL instead of deleting it?

We have been informed that when you change the blog URL, the blog URL will be released for others to register it.

  1. I deleted my Blogger blogs when I moved to WP.

Lucky for me Google did not release the names and I was able to go back and get them a week later.

  3. 1)So what is c-box anyway and how to use it?

2)Yes, how do you add comment link to a template if it isn't there yet?

    Thanks for answering.

  4. Hi Peter, do you know why is it that some blogs appear to be alright in firefox and goes really haywire in IE? My blog www.isaac-khng.blogspot.com looks perfectly fine on Firefox but the alignment just gets so messed up in IE. :( I used one of the 3 column templates mentioned in your blog and was really happy when I managed to edit in firefox. But to my horror, the IE version was really messed up. Need your advice.. thanks so much.

  5. hi Peter,
This brings me to a problem I'm having. My blogs were deleted, I found them through the cache in google and saved the files... however.. I'm trying to figure out how to get them back into blogger on my own domain.

I just don't understand how to do this (and assign a new template) and configure it properly so it will find my old file and use that to build the new index.

I'm not even sure what it is called to find how to do it in google..

    do you have any ideas?

    I'd really be grateful

    Thanks,

    Laura

  7. Peter,
I have done this. I accidentally deleted my blog. I immediately re-created the same URL to protect it. As of yet I have no inclination that my blog was nabbed by spammers and such. It seems to have worked. I however; still am unable to contact blogger in any way for assistance. I've emailed support@ numerous times..politely...I've also filled out various contact forms found throughout the help sections and what not..many suggested via posts on your blog.
I hope someone o'er there somewhere listens..and contacts me and retrieves my blog..it is my lively hood..and this is just terrible.

  12. To Indyank,

From what I know, if you deleted a blog, that URL is reserved for you to claim later, not like long ago. I don't know why you are unable to claim back the blog URL. Perhaps you are using the wrong Blogger or Google account.

  13. For "Mad",

My sympathies. To the very best of my knowledge, the blog URL is reserved for you if you deleted your blog. Why don't you try to post an appeal for help at Google Blogger Help group and try to catch the attention of one of the Blogger Employees there. Only they can help. We are only volunteers with no access to Blogger's servers.

  14. Dear Peter,
    THANK YOU SO MUCH!

It is because of your blog I got my blog back. I accidentally deleted mine and with the links you provided, I was able to contact the support at Blogger. I was persistent and it took some time. But they got back to me.

I don't know if it is a coincidence but the same time you commented on my blog I got an email from Blogger support.

    Thank you 1000000000 times!

    Cheers
    Becky.

  15. I regret deleting a blogspot domain I created, and had read somewhere that you can get it back if it's been within a year, but someone else already has it...not only that but they somehow got the header picture that I created...I faked forgetting my email/password so I know for certain it's someone else as google shows part of the email address, and not that I forgot a different sign-in!

  16. Hi Crystal,

To the best of my knowledge, Blogger from not too long ago has begun to reserve a blogspot URL for its creator to claim back and it cannot be used by other bloggers for their blog.

Now can you please tell us when it was that you deleted the blog and also the blog URL. With that, I can try to find some information.

  25. "link not available"?

    You mean the blog URL?

As far as I know, when you delete a blog, the blog URL is reserved for the previous owner to claim. Maybe you can try later.

  26. I also accidentally deleted my blog yesterday...I was trying to delete my own personal blog but I deleted the wrong one, which was one that my friend and I co-wrote together...I feel terrible because not only did I delete my own work, I wrecked all of his as well.

Is there any way to get it back? Nobody has taken over the old url yet.

    it was http://www.peanutsfromheaveninc.blogspot.com

I've tried e-mailing and submitting all my info. but nothing happened so far... please help I'm really bummed out about this... :(

  27. Blogger has now started to reserve the URL for those who deleted their blog and you may get it back. Some bloggers have got their blog back together with all the old posts

  28. So this morning, I had a blog again but without any of my old posts and without my co-contributor attached also... I tried to re-create the blog yesterday with the old url so I wonder if maybe they restored that blog instead of the original one...?

Is there any way I can get in touch with an actual person to help me get the real blog back? It's just so frustrating because with the form, there's no way to actaully describe your problem...I just want to talk to a real person so somebody can help me get my blog back.. :(

  31. hi I've deleted my blog pretty long ago but I really hope I can get it back now. I've gotten the url but now the older posts or anything else back at all. Please help? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  32. Blogger has not too long ago introduced UNDELETE. Go check your dashboard to see if there is an undelete. However since you deleted the blog long ago, I fear it will not be in your dashboard. What is the blog URL? if you can give the URL perhaps I can try to help but no guarantee

    ReplyDelete
  33. I deleted my blog 1.5 to 2 years ago (it's been long enough that I can't remember exactly how long it's been). I tried the URL tonight and it seems that the URL is available--Blogger gives a message that says "Blog not found, however the name is available." BUT, when I try to register to obtain that URL, I'm told that it is unavailable and am given other suggestions.

I read your comment that says there is now an "undelete" button on the dashboard. I don't see it on my dashboard. Also, I don't understand why I can't register that URL when Blogger says it is available.

BTW, I don't think I ever posted anything to that URL but deleted it when I decided to use it with a different email account. I should have transferred it because I didn't know that deleting it would cause such a problem when trying to retrieve it!

    Thanks!

  34. The undelete was introduced not too long ago and I am not sure how it affect year plus old blogs. I will try to find out more. Subscribe to this comment in case I have something to update.
