Uploading video direct in Blogger post editor

Video can be pretty useful in blogs. For example, there is a nice post with some hard to get Angklung Music. You can upload video from your computer direct from Blogger post editor using the video upload icon video upload icon. This is simpler than uploading to Youtube, Google Video or LiveVideo and then resizing them to fit as the script resulting from uploading direct via the Blogger upload icon video upload icon below:

<OBJECT class=BLOG_video_class id=BLOG_video-UPLOADING height=266 width=320 contentId="UPLOADING"></OBJECT>

only have 1 attribute for height and width and 1 (320px) for width. Now the width is only 320px which will be less than the width of the main column of most blogs including this one (400px). This mean I (and nearly all bloggers) will not need to edit the script to resize the video to fit the main column.

Update: The filmstrip icon for uploading video is not present in the new updated Blogger post editor, but still available in the old post editor. Refer to Blogger video upload icon and the old post editor

Compare that with 2 attributes for Youtube which must be edited to reduce the width (425px) to be equal or less than the width of this main column (400px). For ways to do that, refer to How to resize Youtube Video to fit main column or sidebar and How to resize YouTube video to fit any width.

For Google video, refer to embedding Google video and for LiveVideo, refer to refer to resize LiveVideo to fit main column

  1. But how do you edit an entry w/o erasing the video? For example, I realized that I needed to edit a misspelling, so I went back to the entry to do so, published it, and the video had disappeared. Any tips? Thanks.

  2. Hi Karen,

Are you preparing your post in EDIT HTML or COMPOSE mode? By right if you do not edit the script, it should not be affected. Also to really answer you, I need to take time to test it, hopefully later.

In the meantime, perhaps it may help if you described in full what you did before and after this problem.

  4. I have been unsucessful in getting a video to upload. I let it "dot its thing" overnight, and the video is still not uploaded. Is there a size limit or a compression on the video that I would need to do before I uploaded? Any tips!??! The video I am trying to upload is .avi, 142 MB (149,495,166 bytes), and I use windows media player to open it. Is this too big?

  5. Hi Peter & Karen,

Thank you for sharing your helpful tips. I've previously succeeded in uploading my video onto my blog http://louillh.blogspot.com since June 3. But was unable to upload any videos recently since 30th July. Is there a problem with the system?

    Please advise.

    Many thanks.

  8. hi peter.
do you know how can i add a video not as a post but as a page element on my right side column? I want it to stay always on my main page blog and not to move on as a normal post to older pages.
    Thanks a lot, as always.

  9. I'm trying to upload a video (Windows Media 9, 140kb) and it keeps erroring out. ("Error uploading video, please contact support.") I have tried in Mozilla Firefox and in Internet Explorer. I know the Video works...I've played it several times. Do you have any suggestions?

  10. I vaguely remembered other Blog*Stars reporting problems with uploading videos but not sure. Why don't you post this problem at Blogger Help Group? If you do, do mention that Peter (Enviroman) sent you there. Also, remember to come back and let us know the status of your problem.

  11. Hahahahahm that's funny. Post a question in Blogger Help Group?

Why? To be ignored? lol. I've had at least 3 questions on there for weeks or MONTHS, not one single response. Scroll through those pages, there are hundreds just like that.

Blogger, for the most part rocks, but they really, REALLY need to improve their customer service and help aspects. Sorry, just had to get that off my chest.

Your blog is great by the way!

  12. I also received an error message telling me to contact support when trying to upload a video. I have searched previous cases in Blogger help and all they say is to go through YouTube.

I have uploaded numerous videos through blogger and have only had the problem recently. I really don't want to start using YouTube as my solution. How does the problem get fixed? I'm really frustrated with trying to contact Blogger help or even simply getting a response through their help group.

    Any ideas? Thanks

  13. When I do not know what to do, I normally resort to using different browsers and different computers. Clearing cache and cookies are not my favorite as I prefer to clear cache and cookies when I want to, not when forced to.

  14. As of two days ago, the blogger video upload option has worked for me on four videos.

Perhaps they have fixed a bug and didn't bother to tell anyone they fixed it (very common practice); or, it just happened to work that night.

Give it a try again, hopefully it will work. I've searched far and wide and there seems to be no alternative except to keep trying until it happens to work.

Very pathetic aspect of Blogger in my opinion, but that's how it seems to be.

    Good luck!

  15. Hi Peter,
I was looking for Blogger help regarding the Video Bar that can be added in the bottom of my page. However, the YouTube videos seem preset and I don't know how to select only the ones that I want to be included. Can you help me?

  16. You mean the video bar available via LAYOUT - Add a gadget.

If you want to choose, suggest you embed video in sidebar instead.

  18. You must have switched over to the updated post editor. Go to SETTINGS > BASIC and opt for the old post editor and you will see the video upload icon still there.

  24. hi. i've uploaded a few videos to my blog over the past few months. i was able to view the videos on my blog, but after every video, there will be a big blank space below the video which brought me to an invalid website when i clicked on it. i've tried to get rid of the space below the video, but to no avail. an example of what i meant would be my website over here.

why is it that some people are able to load their videos perfectly (meaning there is no blank empty space below their video) while i am not able to? i've also tried to search for a solution on blogger help, but failed miserably. do you have any idea how to get rid of that "empty space"? many thanks in advance! ^^

  25. Since you posted here, I assume you uploaded the video via Blogger filmstrip icon. Check the code in the post editor in the Edit HTML moce

  26. I have uploaded video before eg Motorbike safety tip and don't have any problem. Show us the codes used to display the video and perhaps we may have a clue

  35. Dear Peter,
My question is similar to ilovemyoil.

Is there any possibility to customize the look and feel of the uploaded videos, not the embeded ones?

What code and where should be entered to alter the player (besides the size values)

    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. a, refer to How to customize Youtube layout, background and channel. Today only have time to do this. Hope to add more details later when I have the time

    ReplyDelete
  37. Peter, would be glad to hear, when you'll get some time for explaining customiztion of the player for blogger uploaded videos.

  38. ".....2-2A, Jalan PJU 1/3B,

You meam :...player for blogger uploaded videos.,,,"

You mean bigger (more mB or bigger file size..????

    ReplyDelete
  39. I mean the color scheme right now, yet would be glad to know, how to configure all of the options, that are available to regular youtube embeds.

As far as I can understand, video uploadedd for blogger calls for youtube player to view it, but no code shows, how to and where to paste the code from youtube API (besides of the player size).

  40. hi peter,

my problem is that the standard size of video being uploaded directly via blogger post editor results to a tiny video. i want to resize this and make it bigger, if possible, as wide as the post column itself. how do i do that?

    ReplyDelete
  41. hello ive uploaded a video in blogger it seems ok when i try playing the video the subtitle of the video doesnt appear anymore but when i double check the source video before uploading the subtitle is ok.but when i upload it and play it i cant see the subtitle.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Small problem only thing is, you need to use the edit HTML mode and not the Compose mode plus the ideas from
Resizing Youtube video fit main column or sidebar
    or
(got more posts but either use my search box or if the above didn't help you ask again)

  43. yernhoj22, give me the URL of the Youtube video you are having problems with and let me test it.

  44. i didnt upload it through youtube i uploaded my video directly to blogger.

  45. got it! thanks for the help peter

    ReplyDelete
  46. "source video"

Well then, perhaps the subtitles in the source video may not be compatible with Google video? Why don't you try to upload it to some other video hosting website like Youtube and see if you get the subtitles are supported.

  49. If possible, I would like to have private video uploaded directly to blogger to play automatically (bypassing youtube). Thank you in advance.

    ReplyDelete
  50. You can upload first then edit the embed code to make it play automatically

    ReplyDelete
  51. I want my video to play automatically and loop when the page is loaded. How can I do this? No html codes that I know work.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Have a look at test youtube embed code to autoplay & loop.

However haven't found answer for Blogger video upload yet as how it works is still a bit mysterious. Maybe will experiment later.

  54. What is the max video file size allowed on blogger? Can I just upload my video from my computer and not from YouTube? I want my videos to be private for painting workshop participants only.
    Any help is appreciated.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Blogger has 2 related articles related to what you are asking{
    Blogger: Post videos
    and
What are the limits on my Blogger account?
Unfortunately neither of them inform of the max video file size.

Regarding Youtube. I believe you have the choice of making your video there private.

  56. So I've been reading here to get help in re-sizing my Blogger video that was uploaded from my mac directly to my blog (no youtube) and did not find what I was looking for BUT... I decided to try something on my own and it worked!! In the HTML editor side you can see what size the video is mine was uploaded at 320 pixels Wide and 266 pixels High... I figured if I can manually change my picture sizes this way why not my video window... and you can!! JUST make sure that you keep the same ratio... I jumped up to 680 Wide & 626 High and it looks great!
