Advice: Upgrade custom domain via Blogger and Google Apps

I have done two conversions of my blogs to custom domain. The first one, Blogger Book went well with no hitch. The second one, this blog which is now www.bloggertipsandtricks.com met a hitch. The domain was purchased and registered direct via Blogger Settings > Publishing cum Google Apps. This time, the blog was in transition for 3 days. On the third day, there was a big problem. Neither blogger-tricks.blogspot.com nor www.bloggertipsandtricks was accessible. I quickly changed back from custom domain back to blogspot.

I wonder if the reason for the problem this time was because when converting to custom domain, I completed the captcha (word verification) many times. I did not see the message "changes saved" at the top of the page because each time I completed the captcha, the box for completing the captcha appeared again and I thought I made a mistake, so completed it again.

I did not try to meddle with CNAME and ANAME. What I did was repetitively switched back and forth from custom domain to blogspot to custom domain many times. After a few days, somehow the problem solved by itself and this blog is now published to the custom domain www.bloggertipsandtricks.com

I have read many reports of blogger having problems with custom domain. So my advice to you if you want to go this route not to purchase and register your domain via any third party. Do that direct in Blogger within the blog SETTINGS > PUBLISHING. Google Apps will do everything for you. The conversion should proceed seamlessly without you having to do anything. Everything is automatic though the blog will be in transition for about 3 days.

If you meet any problem, try switching back to blogspot and then to custom domain until the problem is solved just like what happened to me on this second coversion.

  3. Hello, I don't know where to get the answer to this question, Can you please help? I have posted to Blogger help and gotten no answer. Visitors get "incorrect password" when trying to post a comment. Used to work. I check the 3 places and they are allowed. Tried the cut and paste. still doesn't work. No email for Blogger Help, seriously, only circles, leading back to HelpSite.
    please, help.

  4. Hi Sonia,

I am afraid I have never had the experience of what you are facing now so do not know if what I prescribe will work for you. But if I had been faced with the same problem, I would probably first backup gadgets and backup template and then upload a fresh template. If you tried this course of action will appreciate feedback. But please note this is advice given in good faith and I cannot be held responsible if anything went wrong.

  7. Hi Peter,
Glad your problem was resolved. What are the advantages to switching from Spot to Domain name, if any?
Also, I want my reply to a comment to appear directly underneath it (like yours do). My reply shows up down at the bottom of all the comments. So the commenter has to search for it. Is there a way to change this that's not too complicated?

  8. Refer to advantages of custom domain. For comments, go to SETTINGS > COMMENTS

  12. Post the topic? What is that? Do you mean preparing and publishing a post? If so, it is done the normal way - via Blogger post editor.

  13. Hi Peter, Thanks for the link about Domain Names. May look into it.
I solved my Comments issue. Since I moderate comments before publishing them it seems I have to publish my reply to it first and then publish that comment. Then my reply appears underneath it. Who knew?? Just trial and error. A Dream-Teller

  17. thanks for all the tips! Is there a way to get email to your new custom domain after it's set up? I can see the standard google apps login at mail.CUSTOMDOMAIN.COM, but I don't know what to authenticate with... thanks for your help!

  18. I can't remember exactly but you will have to sign into the admin account (either Goggle Apps or Godaddy) and create any no. of email addresses you want. It is easy I have done it, only cannot remember exactly.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Thanks, Peter - I'll poke around and see what I can do. If you do happen to remember, please post. If I happen to figure it out, I'll do the same. :)

  20. If you bought your domain direct via Blogger and Google Apps, you would get an email with a link to the admin account.

  21. I just started hosting on blogger with a custom domain (I upgraded to custom domain via Blogger/Google Apps), but I am scared of losing all the traffic from my old blogspot address. I am thinking of just doing a redirect from the custom domain to the blog platforms URL (theshadesofu.com to shadesofu.blogspot.com). Is that a good way to preserve Google page rank/Google juice? If so, how do I go about it? Before the switch (which happened yesterday), I used to have about 2000 daily hits on my blog, and I used to be on top of Google search results. Now I am scared. The meta-refresh codes I see on the internet didn't work when I tried to install them to my template, my site kept on refreshing ad infinitum. TIA and any input is greatly appreciated.

  22. It looks like PageRank is not that critical to getting hits from search engine. The PageRank of this blog has now been reduced to 0, however I am still getting hits from search engines. However, I would have to state that I did lose some traffic from Blogger Help pages but the hits from search engines continues.

You don't need to make redirect from your old blogspot address, Google Apps will do that for you.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Please let that be the case for me. Did you get "page cannot be found" when you tried to view your blog?
Just bought my domain and it would be stupid to fall over the the first hurdle.

  29. Peter, I have a question. I would like to get a custom domain for my current website, but will that mean that my ranking at alexa and on google will drop like a stone, I am currently at about 436,000, and don't want to lose that rating.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Changing URL means you will have to start from scratch for ranking unfortunately. What you will not lose is traffic which will be redirected to the new URL. I have mixed experience as far as traffic is concerned. For this blog, I did lose traffic from Blogge Help pages, but not from search engines. My other blog http://www.blogger-book.com experienced a slight increase in traffic.

  35. I recently switched from http://shininghistory.blogspot.com/ to http://www.shininghistory.com/. The blog is still hosted on Blogger and I purchased the domain through Blogger/Google. When I tried to verify shininghistory.blogspot.com for 301 redirect through various online tools (like http://www.searchenginepromotionhelp.com/m/http-server-response/code-checker.php), I get Server Response Code:200 instead of 301. Can you please guide me why i'm not getting 301 and what should i do now.

  36. To be honest, I really do not know exactly what happens "behind the screen" as I just used Google Apps to switch to custom domain and never really did any "real work". What I noticed however, things can changed over time without me doing anything. Example, after confirming that everything is being redirected nicely, on more than 1 not so fine days I noticed that suddenly, the redirections stoped but started again a few days later without me doing anything.

  37. Hi peter,
I upgraded custom domains for my 2 blogs http://www.philippinetraveltour.com/ and http://www.bananacrop.com/ via blogger and google apps. The problem is I don't remember whether I have checked the box to automatically renew my domain name. Is there a way to check this?
    Thanks...

  41. I am trying to create a photography website and have gone through all the steps listed. I now have a custom domain name for one page (blog). I want to create a website with subpages under the domain that I have. For ex. my site is ladybugsphotography.net. I want to create other pages like ladybugsphotography.net/galleries. Is there anyway that I can do that? Right now I creating separating blogs and linking them together, the other pages like my galleries page address is ladybugsgalleries.blogspot.com. Is there another way to go about doing this through blogger?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Unfortunately no. You will have to deal with Anames and Cnames and whatnots which I haven't any appetite to try yet. You best bet would be to post your question at Blogger Help Forum and when you have done that, let me have the URL of the thread.

  43. I'm considering changing my blogspot domain name to a custom domain name, but am unsure about a few things and am just learning about all of this blogging.
    my current blog address is:

    simplyluxurious.blogspot.com

and I can change it the custom domain of:

    www.thesimplyluxuriousblog.com

If I go through Blogger and let Google Apps do everything do I have have to go to twitter, GoogleAds, paypal, and everything else changing to my new web address or will they do it for me?
Basically what widgets will not work and will require me to redo?
Also, will my followers still be able to find me even if they don't know my new web address?
Am anxious and not sure if I should change my domain name.
    Thanks for looking into this.

    ReplyDelete
  44. "twitter, GoogleAds, paypal, and everything else"

Twitter, is not controlled by Google/Blogger but what about Twitter would you need to change if you convert to custom domain?

GoogleAds if you mean Adsense an Paypal will continued to be tied the email addresses you use to sign in and will continue to be displayed as usual.

Basically what widgets will not work and will require me to redo?

HTML and lots others widgets will continue as usual but I am not sure about Followers as that depend on the URL. Try asking this question over at Blogger Help Forum and come back to give us the URL to the thread.

  46. Dear Sir,

My master card is not working for renewal custom domain fees.
    What should I do

    ReplyDelete
  47. I tested going to the Domain Manager to find if there is a provision for changing payment method but only found option to enable or disable automatic renewal.

So I believe you have 2 option, disable automatic renewal and wait to be contacted by your domain registra (either godaddy.com or enom.com) or you will have to contact their support on how to change your payment method or credit card.

Alternatively go to Google Apps support or Google Apps help forum and post your problems there for help.

Will appreciate feedback on your progress

  48. Dear Mr. Peter, I was a beginner, this time I have made 3 pieces of blogs that I associate with a parent blog as a home page via the menu link from the main blog (my main blog is jabirnih.blogspot.com). I'm not able to make websites using html. I find much easier to create a blog. Can I change all my blogspot URL to the domain registered with a subdomain on another blog that I created. Such as example :

my main blog is: jabirnih.blogspot.com ... I want to change to: mydomain.com
my other blog link is: jabir180370.blogspot.com ... I want to change it to: mydomain.com/kuring
other link is: blogjabir.blogspot.com ... I want to change it to: mydomain.com/sabana

What if I register a domain through google apps link, my problem can be solved easily? What if I register a domain through google apps, is that including hosting and subdomains? I do not find a clear and complete information about the problem.

please give some advice for that.. and thank you for your kindness

  49. to obtain a full perspective please visit my main blog: jabirnih.blogspot.com

  51. Hi Peter, I accidentally one day switched from my domain to blogspot. Now I can't find my domain anywhere and when I click on the bookmark it goes to time warner search results. I purchased my domain through blogger and I have tried switching back and forth several times between blogspot and my domain in my publisher settings, but nothing seems to help. I feel like a goof for doing this..help?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Huh? I remembered that some time ago, I had some problems with this custom domain thing and switched between blogspot and the purchased URL which solved the problem. So your comment surprised me but I don't think I want to test that. However, I did go to Dashboard > Settings > Publishing to refresh my memory and what I can suggest to you is to first check if your domain haven't expired then go through the steps of setting up the custom domain including going to that last step Advanced and adding your purchased domain.
