Here is a tip on how to get Blogger to host the pictures for your profile, headings, etc. Simply publish it in a post, an empty one if you like, with only the picture. Then, you have 2 way to get the URL. One is to make sure you are in the EDIT HTML in the post editor of that post. Then look for the HTML for the photo, which should look something like this (click on screenshot to enlarge it):

You will notice two links in the HTML for the photo. One links to the full size image on its own page and the file size is larger. The second link (highlighted in blue) links to the photo you see on the blog page and the file size is smaller. You should copy the second one if file size is a problem (Blogger impose a maximum 50k for the profile photo). Otherwise, (like for example, you want it for your heading), copy the first link.
If you are not comfortable with HTML, there is another way. Go to that post where you have the photo on the web and click on the picture. It will take you to a page with only the picture. Copy the url from the address bar. The easiest way to do so is to highlight it, right-click and select copy. Try it by clicking on the fake book cover of my book "Blogger for Dummies" at the top left hand of the post.
If you are worried that posting the picture will interfere with your blog, there are various ways to make it inconspicuous. You can reduce its size, as I have done for the picture on this post. (To reduce the photo size, in the COMPOSE mode, grab the corner and drag it. This will keep the aspect ratio.) Or you can post it to a blog specially created to upload pictures. Or after you have obtained the url, you can simply resave it as draft or even delete it. The photo will still remain on the web.
BTW I welcome comments about whether the above instructions are easy or difficult to follow, as it will help me improve the blog.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm such a dummy! This was really basic and very helpful!
ReplyDeleteOnce you have published the picture onto your blog and linked the image URL you can then delete the post containing the picture - it still remains uploaded on blogger.
ReplyDeleteWhich sites do you recommend for getting new pictures for the blog? Any in particular. Thanks your blog is great.!
ReplyDeleteLove the blog-
ReplyDeleteDo you recommend any sites that have pictures? Everywhere I look, people have great photos on their blogs etc... Can you help?
Thanks
You Mean copyright free photos. I have been meaning to do a post on a list of sites from which you can download copyright free photos, but have not come round to it yet. So far, what I have done is obtain a CD of phots from the Tourism Department of my country, which I have used here. You can see some of the photos here Testing Blogger Beta. Maybe that is one avenue you can explore.
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to post my picture on my profile since I started blogging last week.No luck. I followed your instructions and even did a test post, and error comes back as broken link.Any clues?
ReplyDeleteCan you give me a link to the post where you uploaded your profile photo?

Hi Amy,
ReplyDeleteI saw the post where you posted your photo, got the URL, did a test blog and tried to put the photo URL into the profile photo field. It returned an error message, saying link broken. Why, I don't know.
I saved your photo into my computer, uploaded it into an old (classic) blog: Testing Amy's Blog, used this (classic) uploaded photo URL and pasted the URL into the field for the Profile photo in a test beta blog Amy's test blog. This time there were no error message.
The photo turned out fine. This appear to be a bug that Blogger should know about. You should post your problem in the Google Blogger Help group and contact Blogger support. See How to contact Blogger Support.
If you still have a old (classic) account, you should try uploading the photo into one of the blogs, get its URL, then put it into your profile. Otherwise, you are welcomed to use the photo uploaded here: Testing Amy's Blog and wait till Blogger get this sorted out. Or just use the photo I uploaded. As far as I know, the photo remain on the web even I one delete the post, so it should be pretty permanent.

I have been trying this and other approaches for days. Hello doesn't work the way it is supposed to and I can not figure out how to post a jpeg from my computer as a post (using new blogger) at this point I can't even get add a photo to load the photo and I have reduced it 120kb...Help? I am getting pretty frustrated.
ReplyDeleteSean
I got it....it works...thanks
ReplyDeleteUploading a photo with the new Blogger is no differnt from the old Blogger, you just use the photo upload icon in the post editor window. This window has undergone very little change. So I don't understand why you are having difficulties. If you know how to upload a photo with the old Blogger, you know how to upload photo with the new Blogger. I have even succedded in posting a photo with Picasa. See post Testing "Blog This" to the new Blogger (formerly beta) from Picasa when others have complained about not being able to do so.
ReplyDeleteMany people have complained about not being able to upload photos in the Google Blogger Help group, and perhaps that you are just experiencing the same difficulties as them. I suggest changing browser as that has helped me more than once when I faced difficulties with publishing and uploading photos, etc. It may or may not help, depending on what is causing the problem. Have a look at the following post What to do when you cannot publish, cannot upload photos, etc..
Also if you are using only one browser (statistics says 80% of surfers use only Internet Explorer), read this post: Why you should be using more than one browser
If you are not familiar with FireFox, see this post What is FireFox and why you should be using it.
Some people also have advised clearing cache and cookies.

ReplyDeleteThanks so much for your blog -- it's a wonderful resource for me and my Mom!

Hi, I followed your step and posted a picture onto my blog. I then went to edit the post, and copied the second href for the picture. It was a gigantic reference, but it seemed to work. When I go and then later "delete" the post. the picture and the href no longer works.
ReplyDeleteI've tried, I think, to delete the post to ways. Once with the "delete picture" checked and once without. both time the picture seems to disappear. and thought?
Hi Ted,
ReplyDeleteIn the old (classic) Blogger, the picture remains even if you delete the picture and/or the post. That has been tested. Haven't tested with the New Blogger. Maybe I will do that and post the result in my blog Testing Blogger beta (now New Blogger)

Thanks Peter. I will wait to hear your test results. I tried to delete the post (while leaving the photo delete unchecked again), and I think that maybe the photos are staying. We'll see. Maybe I didn't really uncheck the box the first time. Beyond that, the other strategy that someone suggested was to put the photo in a post, then leave the post in the drafts folder. so its saved, but just not viewable. Thanks
ReplyDeleteHi Ted,
ReplyDeleteTest completed. See post Testing uploading images and deleting post in New Blogger (formerly beta). Conclusion: In New Blogger, you have a choice of whether to leave the photo on the Web or not. Looks like an improvement over the old classic Blogger especially if you upload a lot of images and are apprehensive of exceeding the limit.

I'm wondering -- my problems uploading pics to Blogger seem to start with a problem after I've loaded a JPEG file. I was editing and went to "edit HTML" and for some reason AOL quit and restarted itself. I had to log back into Blogger and of course my picture and everything disappeared. Then I could not upload anything to Blogger. After a few weeks I was able to load to Blogger again, one time, and I got the same error with AOL quitting again. Is there some bug that I don't know about?
ReplyDeleteThanks,
Sandy (Rudy's Mom)
Hi Rudy,
ReplyDeleteI am from Asia. Don't know anything about AOL. But when I come across problem like you mentioned, my natural reaction will be to try using a different browser to see if that helps. A simple strategy, but one which has helped me through many situations. For example, my son was trying to get the login page for his online banking. No go. I told him - try using different browser. He said, probably server problem, don't want to try. I persuaded him to do so, and when he did, he managed to login in matter of minutes.

hey.. i have published to pic i would like to use on my blog and i did exactly what you mentioned in your blog but still can't get the pic as my background >_<" help me..
ReplyDeleteYour tip is great. I figured this out some time ago.
ReplyDeleteMy problem is that not all of my pictures load. Many are hosted on other servers. But, it's not just the server because some from the same server will load and another one won't. I think they must either load before the page opens or they "get left behind." How can I make my page wait to open until all pages are loaded?
I've read the posts, but as a brand-new blogger, I can not upload my photo because I cannot reduce its size. the max size for a file is 50k and my photo is over 400k
ReplyDeleteI have iPhoto [and an Apple Mac with Firefox] which does not allow me to reduce the resolution except when emailing. I've tried cropping the photo, but that doesn't lose many K... sorry if this is a silly question, but I would be really glad to know the answer. Thank you.
"Size of Pictures: If you are posting pictures through Blogger Mobile there is a limit of 250K per picture."
ReplyDeleteNow I have not tried uploading huge graphic, I haven't found any pictures in my file as large as yours and the above refers to Blogger Mobile which I assume is trying to upload graphics via handphone to Blogger.
Why don't you try posting your problem to Blogger Help Forum or alternatively get Photobucket and display it via <img> tag?
I would like to follow up on this as I would like to find out if Blogger really have a limit for uploading graphic and hope you will keep us updated.
That helped a lot. The only thing is now the picture isn't fitting into the border of the header. How can I fix that?
