Downloading and changing New Blogger template

A number of readers have been having problems downloading and installing templates from third party creaters and modifiers of New Blogger templates, so here is a post to explain the process.

Before I get to that, let me again repeat the importance of backing up your current template AND Page Elements before you change template. Refer to Backup New Blogger template PLUS Page Element and change template. This post will also show how to get to the template editor window.

Generally, 2 methods are offered. One, the one offered by Stavanger of Blogcrowd, gives the template which you have to copy and paste into the template editor window. For tasks like these, it is best you have a browser like FireFox which has tabbed browsing. Then you can be in the page with the new template in one tab and logged into Blogger in another tab in the same window.

In the box containing the new template, click inside the box, press ctrl+A (or right-click and chose "Select all") to highlight all the template, press ctrl+C (or right-click and chose "copy" to copy the new template into clipboard. Go the the Blogger template editor window, click inside the template editor window, press ctrl+A (or right-click on mouse and chose "Select all"). Press the DELETE key. The template window will now be empty. Click inside the empty template window, press ctrl+V (or right-click and select "Paste" to paste the new template from the clipboard into the empty template window. Preview, and if there is no problem, click "Save template.

In most cases, the template is downloaded and saved as an xml file. In this case, in the template editor, click "Browse" at the top of the page, navigate to where you saved the xml file, select it, click "Upload". When done, click VIEW BLOG to make sure everything is OK.

Any further problem, comment in this post and I may use your comment to make the above clearer.

    Hi Peter,

I'm Debbie. I've been a blogger for years now. I LOVE blogspot. I've tried many other blog hosting services and never found them to be half as good as blogger. (Ok, so I'm a little bit biased ;-)

I noticed that the categories are listed on this site. I would like to have 1 page (from my blogspot address) where all my labels are kept. Is there any way to do that through blogger at this time? If not, are there any plans for future versions of blogger to offer this feature?

Thanks for all you do! Blogger's AWESOME! ;-)

  2. Hi Debbie,

Are you referring to the Label List (better known as categories or tags). They are added automatically. Refer to
Label List: What it is and how to make use of it

Make Labels (categories) do what you want.

  3. haha.. definitely when it comes to food, everyone will be zealed up! Okay, i will try my best to collect as many as i can.

  4. Hi Peter, Your post on choosing a new template from a third party. I have tried so many that just do not work that simply. A couple did but then I had problems with the Blogger widgets not working.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that when I delete my template and then add the code for the new template the code itself is incomplete and is not accepted because it is not parsed.

I thought code had to end with

Many I tried do not. Am I missing something?

Also I don't like to download zip files into my computer. I would rather choose a template that you can just copy and paste into Blogger. Why do they use zip files?

Your site is a big help.

Ok, I found an example of what I want to do:

See the way all of this blog's labels are listed on one page? That's what I'd like to do. I want a seperate page to list my labels on. Is this possible?

Thanks again for all your help! :-)

Thank you again for all your help, Peter!

I need advice on how to log into my blog of last year.
I can not log into my blog because I deleted the gmail account associated with it. was my email address that I used to log in. I deleted it not realized that I still needed it to make changes to my blog of last year. That blog represents and entire year of my life and I have been locked out.
Does anyone know if I can assign a new gmail address to my blog?
I have 2 other gmail addresses that could be used.
    I'd appreciate advice very much!

  9. Hi Vanessa,

Most of the third party templates featured in this blog download xml file which you are suppose to click "Browse", locate the saved xml file then upload. That is the easiest and preferred method.

Only BloggerBuster (not complete yet) uses zip file (but which also eventually give you an xml file) while Stavanger (Blogcrowd) gives you the template in text form which you copy and paste into an empty template editor window (old classic Blogger method).

I personally prefer the xml file.

Changing and editing New Blogger templats can be problematic. Maybe you should read Downloading and changing New Blogger template.

Which template are you having problem with. Tell me and when I have time, I will check. BTW one lady contacted me many times saying she had problem with changing template. Turned out that she was clicking on the xml file (some will give a a text template) and copy-paste into the template. When she use Broswe and then Upload, she no longer have problem.

  10. Hi Jessicca,

I am afraid you have created a big problem for yourself. Blogger Support may be able to help you if only they can be contacted (which was possible before) but things keep changing. Problem signing in, seeing blogs in Dashboard, etc used to work but now even I can't get through. You can try and you may have better luck. Other ways is to post your problem to Google Blogger Help group and pray that Blogger Employee Helper see your request for help (Blogger Employee is on vacation).

Other than that, I am afraid I can't help you.

I just made some tests and wrote about it at Scheduling post to be published in the future with Time Cave. Perhaps you can try straight away without waiting for the update regarding the success or failure of the test. If you do, hope you give us some feedback of your experience.

Ok, thanks for letting me know! :-)I'll try to see if I can do it myself manually.

I LOVE to work with Blogger and see what can and can't be done.

Thanks for all the help. :-)

  16. My problem with using these templates is that sometimes it's visible in Firefox and yet nothing shows up in IE or vice versa. At the end, after all the "hardwork", I've decided to just use Blogger's template. But I will try it out again another day.

  17. Hello Peter,

I just wanted to let you know that I'm in the process of implementing a new "Blogger Templates Downloads" section to help readers find and download the templates they like.

In this new section, readers can either download the XML file (most are in Zip folders, though simpler ones are XML files), or alternatively copy and paste the code provided (like the Blogcrowds templates).

I think this will make it much easier for readers to use my templates, and also offer choice as to how they are installed.

Soon I will be posting full instructions, including copying widgets from one blog template to another. The new templates section is located at and is accessible from the main Blogger Buster site. I hope this will be helpful to you and your readers! Please do let me know if you have any further suggestions for me to improve this service.

    Thanks, Amanda

  18. Hi Amanda,

You have a good blog and will probably soon overtake this one. You are doing great work with New Blogger templates and I have been meaning to publish a post about your templates. I note that you now have removed the requirement that users of your templates do not need to host the images themselves anymore. This is a double edge sword. On the one hand, it makes it very much easier for bloggers to use your template. On the other hand, it makes them dependent upon you. The images in their blogs which uses your template will stay as long as your images stay online. Once they go offline for any reasons, they will end up with some pretty funny blogs. It is going to be a heavy responsibility on you.

Many bloggers like fanciful templates like those you are making. I like simple templates like the one I use for this and all my main blogs. No images, no worry about having to host images, no worry about depending on the creator of the template once you have downloaded and saved the template. Fanciful ones like yours requires bloggers to go through tedious steps of hosting the images on their own like what I have described in New Blogger template by Blogger Buster. The blogger, although have to do some hard work in the beginning, is then independent of you. But some may find the process difficult, tedious or are just plain lazy. So you hosting the images for them is a good thing, but makes them dependent on you.

  19. Hi Amanda,

Forgot to mentioned, that was exactly what I heard what happened to the blogs of some bloggers who used some third party templates with images, and those images went offline.

    Natural Remedies

  20. Hello Peter,

Thank you for your speedy response and your comments on Blogger Buster :)

Your suggestions about the template images are perfectly sensible. I think a good solution would be to include all images in the zip file for download with the templates so that users are able to upload them to their own hosting if required. As you said, this does take a lot of effort to do. Even before I said that I would host the images, most users of my templates didn't bother to upload them to their own hosts! So in this way, I can offer a choice.

Since I have prepaid my hosting well in advance (and have no plans to cancel this account!), it is unlikely that the images will become unavailable in the forseeable future. I would of course post messages on my blog if this were ever to happen, and may also consider the possibility of hosting images on Photobucket.

Recently I have been experimenting with simpler templates which feature rounded corners that are controlled by CSS and not external images. Later this week, I will be uploading a simpler template which features only two images, and will soon upload a template which features no external images at all, which will be much faster to load than the fancier ones!

I very much doubt that my blog will overtake yours, Peter, but I'm glad you find Blogger Buster to be useful. Your opinions are always appreciated, and I hope my own suggestions about this may prove to be a good solution to this problem.

    Best wishes and thank you!

  21. Hi Amanda,

Glad you understood what I was trying to convey. Regarding hosting images on Photobucket, I have long had an account but had reservation regarding the possibility of the account being deleted on 2 possibility - not signing in for 3 months for a free account (they have since clarified that this is no longer a requirement, but they reserve the right to delete inactive account) and not renewing subscription for paid account. But I am far away from their HQ, don't know how big and stable they are, but now assured to some extend by the takeover by a large corporation (got the details in one of my post but can't remember the details) and my perception has since changed to some extend. If you don't already have a Photobucket account, I hope you will sign up via the link above as I joined as an affiliate after hearing the good news. I wouldn't get anything if you go for a free account, but it doesn't matter.

Please folks, take good care of our one and only Spaceship Earth which have no lifeboat. It may not affect us severely now, but it has every chance of severely affecting our future generations. Then they will have lots to be "thankful to us)

  22. Hello Peter,

Thank you for your advice. I was under the impression that Photobucket was the most stable image host to date, and know that many bloggers use this to host images externally. I don't yet have a photobucket ccount, though will sign up using your link when I create one ;)

Also I will do some research about free image hosts to let my readers know about the possibilities available when hosting images from my templates themselves. This will most likely be after the weekend as I have some projects which need to be finished first.

For Enviroman: I live in an area of England which was badly affected by the floods. I wholly agree that we should all take steps to ensure greater care of our precious planet :)

  23. Hi - I must be one of the few that haven't moved to the new blogger template because I am petrified of losing all the work that I have put into the customised template I have.

My problem is simple. In IE my blog page appears totally different and I really would like to work out the problems so that all visitors have the same view.

I wonder if you are able to point out for me just where I have gone wrong - or am I beyond help.

    My thanks to you.

    Best regards

  24. Hi debvhu,

Would like to check if I have the luxury of time. But I have 10 plus tasks to do with deadlines running out plus many posts I have not had time to do yet. Your problem seem a bit difficult to solve and likely takes time, and I can only suggest saving your current template (extra precaution because New Blogger automatically save your last old classic template when you upgrade). SOME customizations in old classic template can be saved to put back into the New Blogger template. I think you will enjoy the New Blogger template and I have moved practically all my blogs to the new templates.

  25. One more thing - my opinion which you don't necessarily have to follow. Bite the bullet, endure the pain. It is a one time thing. If you (and Blogger) backup your classic template, you still have the choice of going back. Disclaimer: Do this at your own risk though I think the risk is minimal

I'm coming to you because although I like my template, if I want to make changes to improve it...i get an email saying it's not "parsed" correctly. Can you tell me where the error is in this code, and how can I fix it? I'm unable to add ANYTHING, and I really want to add a "Tag Cloud."

    Thanks Peter,

  27. Hi Ivent,

I am afraid the New Blogger is very fussy and getting error messages like what you are getting is extremely common. Sometimes, even when I am very sure that what I did was correct, I still get the error message. There was one case where I had to upload a fresh template minus all the customization, then add them back again before I could do what I wanted to do.

Further, I do not know how you are adding the tag cloud. I am afraid with the information you provided me, I am not able to help you.

Hi Peter! I don't know if you can help me, but I would very much appreciated if you could. I'm trying to change the template, tried in those two different ways, but an error message aapears "bX-xdmtya" or that message saying is not parsely correct appears. I tried deleting my cache and cookies, like some suggested but I didn't help. Do you have any ideas? Thank you very much!

  32. Hi Camila,

make this work? do you have any ideas

  34. My name is Dianne. I am just starting to blog. I am attempting to paste a meta code in my blog and I did it exactly as instructed but it does not work. I cannot save my template. My error message says "Your template could not be parsed as it is not well formed. Make sure all XML elements are closed. The element type "head" must be terminated by the matching end tag. "". I am copying this metacode from wpslessons,com/metacode.htm Please help. I cannot navigate away from this page without losing my information.

  35. Refer to meta tags for blogger.

HTML tags (which include meta tags) must either be paired or, as in the case of meta tag, be self closing. Write the meta tag as <meta /> (with a backslash).

  36. Hi Peter,

I need your helps since I am out of my comfort zone. I have been blogging for about a month now. I am tryin gto upload a new blog template and I am getting this error:

"Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: Content is not allowed in prolog."

What does it mean? Can I fix it? Please tell me that I can use this template, I really like it.

  37. "Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed."

That is a notoriously frequent error message when trying to upload or edit template.

Where did you get the template, what format (file extension - xml?) and what manner you used to change template (upload or copy-paste)

  38. Ok the site the template is at:
The one I chose was Hot Air Balloons.

I clicked on the download button and saved as a zip file.

    Then went to Blogger:
LAYOUT - Edit HTML - upload blank
I Browsed to locate, clicked ok
it showed up in the blank, clicked upload and then the error came up.

I hope this is what you need.

    Thanks for the help

  39. I forgot to tell you that the file is an XML..

  40. If it is a zip file, you need to unzip it first.

"I forgot to tell you that the file is an XML.."

If it is an xml file, then you have to go to LAYOUT > EDIT HTML, browse to where the xml file is located, upload.

  41. Peter, you are an angel. Thanks for helping me out. I now have another problem. I feel like this is very complicated and I'm not sure if it is or if it's just me.

Now when I upload the new template I get this message:

Widgets are about to be deleted
    Please confirm that the following

    widgets should be deleted.

All the widgets' configuration data will be lost.

    Now what????

Is there a way to actually save the new templates onto the page with the choices when you first set up your blog?

Thanks, I would be crying with frustration right now if it weren't for you.

  42. That (delete gadgets) is unfortunately what usually happens when you upload fresh template and that is the reason the advice to backup page elements (and backup template whenever we write about changing templates.

  43. Peter-

I'm trying to upload the Blogger Main templates off of I used to do it years ago and it worked fine! Now any template I choose it comes with an error message. They don't provide the xml file and the copy/paste technique isn't working. Any thoughts??

  44. Can you help me?????????????
when i try to do this i got this message "Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: Content is not allowed in prolog."
    what is my problem
    i need help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  45. Perhaps you may want to consider deleting some gadgets (especially those that may be related to "prolog") then try again and see if that helps
