Add Music to your blog: Another easy way

Here is another easy way for you to add music to your blog. Go to eSnips. There you can upload your music file and other files like videos, photos and files. Here we will just be discussing music, but videos, etc., should be no different. You can check out this post where I have used eSnips to embed a music player into the post: Testing embedding own music in post.

The best way to go is to first sign up for an account first. Then you can have a folder for your files which you can refer to whenever you need to. If you have your own music file, first upload it. You still can have music if you don't have your own music file. All you have to do is to choose one which is available to the public in eSnip. If you don't have your own music file, or you want one that is available in eSnip, click on fresh from the "DJ Community" and click on a selection. Click "MP3 Widgets" and you will be presented with a page where you can copy the script to add to your blog (see screenshot (click to enlarge):

eSnip widget preview

The default is to only play the music if a visitor click on the Play button. However, you can make the player play the music automatically the moment the page opens by choosing Yes in the Auto Play drop down menu at the bottom of the preview page (see bottom of the screenshot above). This setting (autoplay) is not favoured by many because of fear of unwanted interruption like when a person is surfing at night and there is a baby sleeping nearby. The person will have to quickly exit the site to stop the music playing. That is why the default is set to "no".

Update March 16 2007: Got a tip about Odeo from Brad of Brad Linder's Digital Home. I tested embeding a selection into this post Testing embeding musical from Odeo. However, unlike eSnip, they don't give you the option of whether you want autostart or you need the visitor to click the "play" button to play the music. In this case, a visitor will have to click the "play" button to start the music.

UPDATE 5 November 2007: See eSnip music player in sidebar for instructions on how to make the eSnip player fit the sidebar (click BACK button to get back to this page).

Hi Peter, Another nice Tip. I am trying it out. Great Job.

Finally, I managed to upload song using your tips. You will like this song. Tks again.

You can also use Odeo to post audio files. I used Odeo to post 7 sound clips for a review of a digital audio recorder I posted on my blogger blog the other day.

Odeo doesn't work with video though, so esnips might be a good alternative to YouTube for video clips.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the extra information. I may try that out and add it to the post.

I couldn't get it to work. I pasted the html code into my Blogger post but when I hit the publish button I got a message saying it couldn't complete my request due to a tag not being closed. I tried repeatedly with different mp3s and different skins thinking there was just a mistake in my code but nothing worked for me.
:-(

Peter Chen said...

Hi jasia,

Could you by any chance left out part of the code? Try clicking on the inside of the box for the codes and press ctrl+A to highlight all the code, right-click, and select copy, then paste it into your post. The HTML worked for me in both examples.

Brad Linder said...

Jasia: I got the same error using Odeo at first. I'm not sure why. What I did to get it to work:
1. Erase all the new code I'd copied and pasted from Odeo.
2. Save the post.
3. Go back to edit it (in HTML mode) again.
4. Copy and paste the code again.
5. Hit publish.

That's it... second time's a charm.

Peter: As for the inability to use Odeo to automatically play a file when a visitor comes to your web page, I'm not sure I consider this a limitation. As someone who visits a lot of web sites during the course of a day, I can't stand it when I enter a page and it automatically starts playing an audio file or a video clip. I'd much rather be given the option of whether I want to listen or not.

Hi Peter. Your tips have been very helpful! Question: I was successful in downloading the mp3 player from e-snips, but I am not sure how to change the song. How can I maintain the actual player from the DJ tab using the mp3 widgets option, and add my own songs, rather than be limited to the songs on e-snips? Thanks for your help!

Peter Chen said...

Hi the frog,

To use your own music, first upload your music to e-snips, then go to that file and get the widget and embed it into the post or a Page Element. I have tested it. The file I uploaded is here: Cikguas227-music and I have embedded that song into this post Testing putting own music using e-Snips in blog post

Mild hack on Peter Chen's tip:

Problem: You want a .wav file with speech on your blog but you have neither a) microphone nor b) the ability to speak. What shall you do without getting somebody's help in person or online beyond the instructions to follow?

A Solution: Surf over to the ATT Labs text-to-speech generator(http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php), type in the text you want spoken and create a .wav file. Next, do as Peter Chen suggests regarding a music file on his blog. 'Presto' you have automated speech on your blog or website and you didn't need to a) hear the words, b) have a microphone with which to speak words now spoken on your blog or website, nor c) have anyone record the speech you generated into a .wav file.

Peter Chen said...

Hi Katherineholm Review,

Thanks for the tips. I will test it out, and I may make a post out of it with acknowledge and a link you your website if the test worked out and you let me know what website to link to.

Katrineholm Review said...

Hi Mr. Chen,
Oh, it's OK, you don't have to link back to any website of mine. Just mentioning it here as you have already done with my Katrineholm Review earlier is enough. I think my little edition to your original instructions can be useful to people who don't have microphones but want to have, for example, a .wav file greeting someone who comes to their website or blog. It's simple to do. What interests me about various hacks is how people can do things as cheaply as possible (like placing OpenSource software on USB sticks and being able to do their work anywhere for next to nothing except for the cost of the USB stick if they have access to the Internet at, say, a local library). Stuff like that. Anyway, good luck and thanks for blogging!

Daniella said...

Hi Peter,
Thanks for putting this up.. I have a question, though. I followed the instructions you gave for uploading a song onto esnips, then i copied the widget, but there was no customize drop down thing where I could select yes/no.

I pasted the widget anyway and published my post. But all I got was an image which I could click on and it would link it to my esnips folder for that song.
But I don't want it that way. I want the readers to just click play on my post, exactly like the testing one that you posted.

How can I do that?? Does this make sense to you at all??
Sorry I am an absolute dummy when it comes to stuff like this.
Please help!!

Peter Chen said...

Hi Daniella,

Someone else earlier indicated that he followed the instruction exactly and it didn't work. I tested it before I post (in fact you will see a demo via the link in the post), however, when I tried it again, I couldn't do what I could do earlier. If I remember correctly, I sent eSnip a support request and I think I didn't get a response. They may have changed something, I don't know. Maybe I will have to try it again and if it still fail and a second request for support didn't get a response, I will probably have to do an update to the post.

Or if you know of another site that serves the same function, please to let me know.. (I would really appreciate instructions, if possible).

Cheers mate!

Daniella said...

Hi Peter,
I just thought that I should let you know that I found out why I couldn't get the widget for the song to play directly on my blog. It's because the song needs to be in MP3 format. If the song is in a WMA then esnips will only you a widget for an icon to link you to esnips where the reader can listen to it from there. But if it's in MP3 format, then I can post the song directly on there just as you instructed, and the reader can click on play to hear the song directly from the blog.

Hi Shelbi,

I tested eSnip before publishing and therefore have no idea why you are having problem. Perhaps your choice of song. Perhaps redoing it with another song may help. Or there are plenty other ways of putting music online:

Embedding Imeen playlist using embed script
Embedding music with Imeen
Make music slideshows with Fliptrack

There is another one - Odeo which I think I mentioned in one of the post but did not do a special post on it.

Hi Peter,

You suggestion helped me putting up the song on my site.

However, I am facing issues in playing the song. You see, the song plays perfectly fine on esnips. But it fails to do so on the widget. It just shows buffering but no sound at all.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

This is awsome.. and easy.

I only got one problem. The music (I posted it into the sidebar) does not start automatically. Although in html code it says:
"autoPlay=yes"

do you have any idea how to solve that problem?
It playes when you click on play.. but not on it's own when you open the blog.

I get this msg: Your template could not be parsed as it is not well-formed. Please make sure all XML elements are closed properly.
XML error message: The reference to entity "objectid" must end with the ';' delimiter. I CRTL+A the code within the box from esnips, so i couldn't have missed anything. Any ideas?

Peter Chen said...

Hi Sarah,

Sorry have no time to check. See Why your comments and emails are not getting prompt response. Anyway, I think setting the music to start automatically is a bad idea as a visitor may be frightened off by loud music in the middle of the night beside a sleeping baby and quickly surf away from your site.

Hi Mark,

I published this post some time ago and have so many things going on that I can't remember what is inside the post. I suspect instead of adding the script direct into the template, you should go to LAYOUT and click Add a Page Element. Select HTML/Javascript and paste the script inside there. Please give feedback as I will have to decide if I should test it again and edit the post to make it clearer. See also Add advertisements, visitor counters, music player, etc.
